Wednesday Season 2 is about to return to our screens to make our August even more sinister. And while the new season has added some new characters, what about those we met in Season 1? While some, like Tyler, are returning, the fate of others remains unknown. We’re talking about Marilyn Thornhill, the botany teacher played by Christina Ricci.
What Happened in Wednesday Season 1?
At the end of Wednesday Season 1, we discovered that the innocent botany teacher was hiding some pretty dark secrets. Starting with her name. Her real name is Laurel Gates, and she faked her death when she was a child. The Gates were a very wealthy family who hated Nevermore and everything it stood for. To them, people like Wednesday shouldn’t exist. That hatred was heightened when Gomez, Wednesday’s father, was wrongly accused of the death of Laurel’s ancestor.
Thus, Laurel is the last of the Gates family and swore revenge on all the inhabitants of Nevermore, especially the Addams. To do so, she uses her plants to reveal the Hyde, Tyler’s true nature, with the sole objective of attacking the Nevermore students and destroying Wednesday. She became his master, and used him to her advantage.
However, that was only part of her plan.
Laurel’s true intention was to resurrect Joseph Crackstone, one of her ancestors and founder of the town. Joseph was a fervent anti-Outcast, and the Gates swore to preserve his legacy and continue his fight against them. And the worst part is that Laurel succeeded. She resurrected Joseph Crackstone. But her joy didn’t last long. Wednesday, along with her friends, managed to defeat Crackstone and return him to where he should never have come from.
Seeing that her last chance to destroy the Addams was slipping away, Laurel tried to kill Wednesday, but she managed to land a well-deserved kick in the face. After that… we don’t know what happened to Laurel after that. We don’t know if she ended up dying or was imprisoned like Tyler.
But if Ricci’s IMDb is to believed, we’ll see Laurel again in Wednesday Season 2. She’s listed as being in the first episode. And just maybe, she’s waiting for the opportunity to strike again and finish what she started in Season 1. Or perhaps she was caught and managed to escape. No matter what, we’re about to find out the truth of her fate soon enough.
Wednesday Season 2 will premiere on August 6 on Netflix.
