There was so much going on in Wednesday Season 2 Episode 5 “Hyde and Woe Seek” that I don’t even know where to start. After the events of Episode 4, we went on a mini hiatus before Part 2. And Episode 5 dives right into it with Wednesday receiving her new spirit guide in the form of Principal Weems, Enid stepping into a more active role, and Wednesday thinking that she can control the Hyde. Spoiler. She can’t.
And right off the bat, I’ve got to say that the most unnecessary cartoon villain part of “Hyde and Woe Seek” is Tyler. He’s one dimensional. And that’s made even more obvious with the return of his mother Francoise. I was really hoping that she was Morticia’s long lost sister. But she’s not Ophelia. She’s Tyler’s mother, who has a deadly edge to her just like her son, and who can change the tie to make Tyler finally interesting.

The introduction of Francoise also led to a really interesting two sides of the same coin kind of moment between the mothers. Both Francoise and Morticia were students at Nevermore and have extraordinary children. Those extraordinary children just so happen to be in a fight to the possible death. And even though Francoise promised Morticia that she would take Tyler away, I don’t think it’s that easy. As a mother, you don’t let go of pain like the kind Francoise has experienced. And just you wait until she finds out what happened to her son.
Wednesday herself is smack dab in the middle of this, super sure that she was going to be able to pull the same move that Tyler’s previous master did. And I’m glad it didn’t work out. There’s truly no spark between Wednesday and Tyler besides an antagonistic one. And while I like relationships that go from enemies to lovers, this just isn’t it. I can see them maybe being hesitant allies against a bigger evil, but that’s about it. And I wish the show would develop Tyler a little bit more before pushing these two together again.

On a more important front, Wednesday Season 2 Episode 5 “Hyde and Woe Seek” makes it even more abundantly clear that there is a bigger picture going on. We’ve just been dealing with the aftershocks of whatever pain was inflicted on Francoise or Isaac. Outcasts have been hurt by humans, something that was also made abundantly clear in Season 1. So what happens when the outcasts have had enough? What happens when they’re tired of being used to make normies into outcasts? That’s going to be the most interesting part for whatever’s going to come in Season 3.
I also want to take time to talk about Enid in Wednesday Season 2 Episode 5 “Hyde and Woe Seek.”
She’s stepping out on her own in Season 2 in a way that we haven’t seen before. In Part 1 she was circling Wednesday as Wednesday was keeping a pretty big secret from her. But now we see Enid stepping out on her own and taking her life into her own hands. She brings together the Nightshades again to help Wednesday and herself against Tyler. And she faces off with Tyler despite knowing that he could possibly tear her down without a second thought. That’s bravery.

Another really important part of her journey that I think signals to something bigger happening for Enid outside of Wednesday is that scene at the very end of Episode 5. Enid couldn’t transform in Season 1 and only transformed during the blood moon. That has to be on purpose. And I think she’s losing control if her torn ballet outfit on the floor is anything to go by. But with her being an essential character to the show, I have no doubt that whatever happens to her, we’ll find a way around it or through it. Enid is too important to be sidelined.
Additional thoughts about Wednesday Season 2 Episode 5 “Hyde and Woe Seek”:

- The Billie Piper fan in me didn’t catch that her character is a werewolf. The Doctor Who fan in me is screaming “Bad Wolfffff!”
- Catherine Zeta-Jones looked so beautiful in her dress with the florals in her hair.
- Also her commanding presence as she entered the crypt and told Francoise to back down. Amazing.
- And finally, we need to see more of the Nightshades. There’s power there. Use it.
Wednesday Season 2 is now available on Netflix.
