1. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows “a group of narcissistic and sociopathic friends who run the Irish dive bar Paddy’s Pub in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.” And if you like raunchy comedies and want to see Olson in a completely different role, you have to watch this show.
Olson plays Dee Reynolds. She’s one of the co-owners of the bar. And, honestly, her character is the absolute worst. She’s selfish, gets herself into the craziest situations, and is only matched in her awfulnessness by the rest of the cast. But a curiosity of her role in it is that she works with her husband—Rob Mac, who plays Mac and is the creator, executive producer, writer, and director of the show. Also, their characters hate each other, leading you to wonder how fun set life must be.
You can watch the show on Hulu.
2. The Mick
What The Mick is about? Well, “when her wealthy sister gets arrested, irresponsible grifter Mickey winds up in charge of three spoiled children and a palatial Connecticut estate.” And it’s one of those comedies you need watch.
In The Mick Olson played Mackenzie Murphy (Mickey) and she was a hard living Aunt who was forced to take care of her wealthy sister spoiled children after their mom flee the country to avoid criminal charges. Mackenzie is a mess but she grows throughout the series.
This was the first time Olson took on a leading role. And there’s a connection to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia! The creators of this show are also executive producers. If you want to learn about Olson’s origins, you have to watch it. It’s part of her story.
You can watch the show on Prime Video.
3. The Drew Carey Show
In The Drew Carey Show, “with a boring job, disappointing dates, a garage distillery and too much love for beer, Drew and his group of friends try to endure what seems like a life that will always be mediocre.” And this series is a 90s classic!
The Drew Carey Show was one of Olson’s first big roles. She played Traylor. And, as a curiosity, there’s an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia where she wakes up and Traylor says “I had the craziest dream last night that I was in Cleveland, Ohio” and that’s where The Drew Carey Show was set. So, if you want to see Olson when she was starting out her career, you should check out this series.
You can watch the show on Apple TV.
4. Hacks
Hacks follows “the professional —and personal— relationship between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedian trying to stay relevant, and Ava, a canceled young screenwriter who becomes her new collaborator.” And the two complement each other perfectly, even when things get disturbing. Especially when that happens.
In Hacks, Olson played DJ Vance, Deborah’s daughter. DJ is impulsive, sarcastic, and she’s resentful of her mother, who always put her career before family. So if you want to explore a totally different side of Olson, you have to watch it.
You can watch the show on HBO.
5. New Girl
New Girl follows “Jessica ‘Jess’ Day, a quirky and optimistic teacher who, after a breakup, moves into an apartment in Los Angeles with three single men: the bartender Nick, the vain Schmidt, and the former athlete Winston, who replaces an initial roommate named Coach.” And it’s the kind of show that builds upon itself with every episode you watch.
In New Girl, Olson played Ashley. Ashley used to be Jess’ old classmate that the dad ended up marrying but they divorced later on. In this series, Olson did something different. She still was in the comedy space but not being what she’s most recognized for—a nasty and selfish character like Dee Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
You can watch the show on Hulu.
