Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 4 “Rites of Passage” focused on relationships between children and fathers as the Silvers remember their dad, Ben. Sean and Danny also made some progress with their relationship, and we saw maybe the strangest case on the show so far. And somehow it all works. Kind of.

Three Cases … One Mystery?
The case of the week (or cases?) all ended up being part of the same crime. Lena and Danny investigate the murder of Henry Chen, which leads to finding Sarah as she’s investigating a bank robber. The case gets even more complicated when Jonah and Sean, who are investigating a hit and run, also show up at the same crime scene as Danny and Lena. Apparently, the bank robber not only killed Henry, but also hit a guy on his bike. Not the smartest criminal ever.
This case was kind of ridiculous and not very realistic, but we did enjoy seeing Lena and Sarah work together. We love when women, and sisters, support each other. We were also glad Sean told Danny how he felt about their relationship. Danny isn’t a bad father, but he spent most of Sean’s childhood working. And Sean feels like Danny isn’t giving him the recognition he deserves for good police work. So we’re glad Danny realized he needs to work on his parenting skills and separating being a father from being a detective.

Remembering Ben Silver
The biggest story in “Rites of Passage” was remembering Ben Silver on the anniversary of his passing. It’s clear that Ben was very important to his family. The case of the week definitely affects Lena, especially while interviewing Henry Chen’s daughter, and she confides to Danny about why she didn’t fully convert to Judaism. And we understood her struggles as she didn’t want to disappoint her grandfather.
At the end of “Rites of Passage,” she decides she does want to convert. And it seems like the right decision for her. But even better, we’re happy that her grandfather understood. “I don’t care how you pray. As long as you pray.” That right there was a profound statement, and very good advice.
Besides Lena, Jonah also struggled with the loss of his dad. He shares with Sean how his dad would take him to Bosco’s and they would play darts together. We thought it was sweet that he gave Bosco’s to Danny and Sean. It also shows that Sean and Jonah aren’t just partners; they’re best friends.
It’s not often that shows let men be vulnerable and share their feelings with each other, and we’re glad that Boston Blue have given us this relationship.

Other Thoughts:
- We know Mae struggled going against her late husband’s ruling. And it was a difficult case, but we’re glad she made her own choice.
- Jonah was right – that was the most exciting ending to a hit-and-run ever.
- “Somebody was right. And by somebody, I do mean me.” Oh Danny. Don’t ever change.
- We loved seeing Sarah get so excited when she found of the bank teller was not a hostage, but in on the crime.
- Lena’s speech to Henry Chen’s daughter made us tear up. The things we do to remember our loved ones aren’t just for the ones we’ve lost. They’re for us, too. And that’s okay.
