Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 9 “Collateral Damage” focused on Ben Silver’s murderer being released from jail and how all of the Silvers were affected. Jonah was angry and his emotions led him to make some choices that could change his life, and the rest of the Silvers’ lives, forever. Sarah focused on work and trying to get her father’s murderer back behind bars. And Lena? She was the glue that held the family together. Overall, we’ve got plenty to talk about.
Silver Family Dinner

The Silver family dinner in “Collateral Damage” was very different than other dinners. Usually, the dinners are a time for the family to connect and discuss events. Sometimes they give constructive feedback or criticism but it’s always with love. There was nothing constructive about this dinner. Everyone was emotional. Obviously. And we’re not judging Jonah for being angry. We’d be angry, too, and everyone grieves differently. But his lashing out at Sarah and Mae made us concerned because he’s usually his sisters’ biggest advocate. We were right to be concerned, and we’ll get into that later.
Lena was the rational one at dinner. She’s grieving her father, too, but she was able to control her emotions and see why Mae had to go after the corrupt A.D.A. in her office. Sometimes the right thing to do isn’t easy, and Sarah, Mae, and Lena all realize that. We really appreciate Lena trying to be the calm one and try to be there for all of her siblings. It seems like that’s always the person Lena’s been. Sarah even made the comment that Lena’s always been the one to take care of the family.
Her ability to take care of others while she’s hurting herself makes her an amazing sister, and good detective. Lena and Danny were great in helping catch Marty’s killer and giving his daughter some closure. And if she had focused on her grief, then she wouldn’t have been able to do her job and help Marty’s daughter. This episode really showed how much of an asset Lena is for the Boston P.D., the community, and her family.
Winter Cliffhanger

Jonah’s anger led him to make some out-of-character decisions. As we mentioned, he was angry at dinner and lashed out at Sarah. He also pushed Sean away. We were hoping that his grandfather got through to him when they had the heart-to-heart at Ben’s grave. When Jonah broke down crying, we thought he was getting his emotions out in a healthy way. But we were wrong.
To say we were shocked at Jonah murdering Ronan is an understatement. And, honestly, we’ve watched so much television that not much shocks us anymore. But we can’t believe Jonah did this. We really hoped that someone else pulled the trigger. But when he apologized to Lena and Danny, all of our hope vanished. We wish he had just taken a moment to think before he acted or trusted Sarah to do her job and get Ronan convicted again.
Jonah has to be arrested, right? We don’t see how the show can get around that. But can he somehow get out of being convicted for murder? And who will lead his case? Obviously, it can’t be Lena. Will it be Danny? He did say at the end of “Collateral Damage” that he thinks he needs the BPD badge now. Is that so he can be in charge of Jonah’s case?
Jonah wasn’t thinking about anyone else in this moment, and we’re disappointed in him while understanding how complicated this all is. Murdering Ronan is going to change his mom’s life, his sister’s lives, and Sean’s. They’re going to be absolutely devastated. And we’ll have to wait until the show returns on February 22nd of next year to find out what happens next.
Other Thoughts:
- We loved the scene between Lena and Sarah. We’ve mentioned that it seems like shows seem to put females against each other. We’re glad that Lena and Sarah are close and have a positive sister relationship.
- We understand why Danny’s hesitant to become an official Boston detective. Being a New York detective has been his entire identity for so long and having to retire from there means officially starting a new chapter. But after Jonah’s shooting and his comments, we think he’s here to stay. And we think Sean and Lena are going to need him.
- Finally, we appreciate the writers treating this episode as a winter finale. Many shows this year have ended with strange episodes as a mid-season finale that don’t give us much reason to tune in next year. “Collateral Damage” gave us so much to think about while waiting for the spring premiere.
- We’ve enjoyed Boston Blue so far, and we’re excited to see more of the Silvers next year.
Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS.
