High school seems like a b**ch and so very complicated these days, but it doesn’t mean that we’re not enjoying movies these days that talk all about being in school or showcase what it’s like. High school is hard.
Maybe it’s the person in me that seems to like to punish myself. I am old as dirt (but as I was once told, the world needs dirt), but all it took for me to want to watch How To Lose A Popularity Contest was the title. I have lost many in my life so I figured this I would be an expert at.
But the movie was not the type of popularity that I experienced loss at. High school politics? Hard pass. This movie though? We’re all for that. The movie follows, “a rebellious student and a perfectionist overachiever form an unlikely alliance in their race for student body president, discovering unexpected feelings along the way.”
Now if you aren’t familiar with Sara Waisglass, you should be. The actress is on Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia and was also recently cast in the adaptation of Into The Deep Blue.
Chase Hudson is a social media personality, known for being on of the individuals to have found Hype House.
Waisglass’ character of Ellie is an overachiever and Hudson’s character of Nate is a slacker. The two working together feels weird – because of lack of onscreen chemistry. BUT, that being said, the movie still worked if we’re taking the characters individually.
But the first thing we wanted to know was what makes Nate redeemable. Why? Because he’s a piece of work through this whole thing and sometimes to the point where you wanna jump into the movie and have a come to Jesus moment with him.
Chase answered first about Nate being redeemable, saying, “What was cool about him was you would look at him and be like, “Oh, he’s just a little golden retriever. He doesn’t know that he’s doing anything wrong. He just throws a baseball.” I think that’s so cute for Nate because what makes him redeemable is just his charisma. That’s the shining character trait of Nate, honestly.”
Sarah added, “I think Nate cares much more than people think he does. I think people assume that he just waddles through life. Ellie definitely assumes that he’s got nothing in his brain and is just going class to class, whatever. I think when she starts to see that he’s got some serious depth to him and that he does think about things deeply and that he cares, it changes her whole perspective and is like, ‘Maybe I have things in common with someone who I really thought was my enemy,’ which is very special.”
Speaking because – well you know life and all that – they definitely do have something in common. They are both petty and that’s not a bad thing. Because of how Nate does come across in the movie, there is no way I would let him date my daughter. Hard pass. But would they let him date their daughter?
Chase said, “I would have to also get to know him and be like, “You know what let’s talk. Let’s go outside.”
Sarah added, “Yes, I got to vet him.”
