If you like anyone in Tell Me Lies, the only person that is reasonably likable at times is Wrigley. He’s definitely not perfect, but he is more reasonable than anyone else on this show. Most of the characters in this serious are seriously deluded and are frustrating. Season 3, episode 5 of Tell Me Lies has me thinking that every single character on this show needs to be hospitalized.
Tell Me Lies has become a scientific study in toxicity and what to avoid in life. So what should you be avoiding? Apparently it is anyone who goes to Baird.

YALE LAW SCHOOL
Steven getting into Yale Law School? Shocked. Diana getting in? Not surprised at all. I think one of the saddest things though is that we see him get his acceptance letter and there’s nobody to tell. His sister doesn’t wanna speak to him. The next person that he calls is Wrigley. Steven wants to celebrate. Wrigley has to get permission to spend time with him and there’s nobody to really call and tell it’s gotta be such a lonely existence.
Steven has to think about how lonely life is, but I also think that is something he will never admit to himself. He lies to himself that he’s important to people, but he’s not. They don’t want anything to do with him.
But Steven, he’s going to press the subject and he heads to Evans to talk to him and pick up something he left. Unfortunately he sees Bree there. We all know that this is not going to be a secret that he can keep. Steven tells everything that he shouldn’t.
And I don’t think that Bree is ready to commit to anyone. Not even to herself. She’s run back to Evan for comfort. Evan is obsessed with Bree, so I do believe that he’s willing to take whatever he can get. I also just think that we’re all fooling ourselves if we think that Steven will not figure out a way to use this to his advantage.
Because he’s all about the advantage.
Having no one Steven decides to try and hit on someone new. If someone doesn’t know him, he’s got a chance.

LUCY AND ALEX
Alex and Lucy have always been kind of weird. The way that they’re rough with each other, the way that they put each other down, and they act like it’s normal. She went over to have sex and he asked what was going on with her. She was so confused with how he was talking to her. It made her uncomfortable.
She was feeling weird about talking and he admits that he heard about the Facebook group and what Chris might’ve done to her. He really felt like this changed everything between them. The way that he thought he was being, he had really thought he was good but now he was felt like it was coming from a point of trauma. He didn’t wanna hurt her so he wanted to back off on the way that they had been acting. Alex does not want to hurt anybody, especially Lucy.
Lucy keeps trying to explain that there isn’t trauma, but there is. It’s just not how he thinks and she can’t tell him the truth. Lucy has to deal with what she thought wouldn’t come to anything, but it has become a big deal.
And I don’t feel bad for her at all. She screwed up on her own.
When she goes back to him a few days later he tells her that normal sex can be good to. Only for Lucy, it isn’t – she can’t get off unless she’s told how wrong she is or how disgusting she is. Alex is trying to show her she’s worth something and all she can believe about herself is that isn’t true.

THE DORM
Steven, Evan, and Wrigley are out drinking and playing pool. They are supposed to be celebrating Steven getting into Yale, but I don’t think anyone really cares. Steven thinks about himself first and doesn’t think of anyone else.

But Wrigley is changing. As Evan and Steven talk about women, Wrigley is annoyed by them. He’s stopped putting himself in situations that are going to harm his mental health (or at least her tries).
What I do love is that Wrigley tells Steven off as he keep trying to get them to go back to his dorm. It’s where Wrigley’s brother passed away – it truly is weird that Steven has not moved out and is still in the dorm where Wrigley’s brother passed away. How he couldn’t have figured that out and has to have that explained to him – it makes me think worse of Steven.
I didn’t think that was possible.
Evan having to explain to Steven that it is weird that he stays in the dorm is a testament to Stevens delulu.

TO MOM WE GO
Bree and Wrigley going into town – she admits to him she was going to Jersey. She wants to visit her Mom. She hasn’t seen her since she was a teen. Wrigley doesn’t think twice about driving her. He’s going to be there for her.
The two of them on the car ride is awkward. They don’t speak. They need to talk more. Bree and Wrigley have this weird tension between them and I love their tension. But I don’t trust Bree, so I don’t want to encourage that too much. But when they get there, he’s giving her the space she needs.
When they meet up with Mary at a brunch spot – again, Wrigley gives space. I wish he wouldn’t have because it would have pushed Bree to be honest. She tells her Mom she just wanted to see her, but she isn’t mad with her. They go over the past and Bree remembers it all wrong. It’s also this choice that Bree makes, where there are a bunch of lies that are told.
I am not sure why Bree wants her Mom to think that she has everything together, because she doesn’t. It worries me how easily Bree lies, but also seeks the acceptance of her Mom. She wants her to be proud of her and I do get that.
Bree takes her Moms picture and I do believe that is more for her than anyone else. She wants something to hang on to. Having that is something that will bring Bree some peace. She feels like there has to be someone who gets her, because she’s always felt awkward.
Like everything has just been glanced over with her. She says that she didn’t even learn how to swim.
I could tell how much Wrigley cared about her when he tried to teach her to swim. The way that these two have their moments makes me believe that they could be good together. However, the way that they also won’t give in to it or be honest about it also scares me. Why?
Secret relationships only get other people hurt.

THE BEACH
The beach party fundraiser – I didn’t really care about what Steven and Evan were doing – but I do care about the interaction between Chris and Lucy. I was shocked that he approached her but was not shocked that he waited until she was alone. He wanted to know why she was doing it, they’d known each other forever.
Lucy is defensive with him and I don’t blame her. However, he’s not wrong that her saying he did something to her is wrong. That being said other people, they are not wrong in coming forward and Chris’ take in this is gross. His whole defense – I can’t. This whole situation is hard to talk about because it is triggering for m.
I do forsee this getting worse for Lucy though, because she screams at him not to touch her and everyone turns to look. Lucy made a big mistake with what she’s said and keeps making it worse.

THE LIBRARY
Steven at the library – seeing Diana – he’s of course got to go and say something about Yale. I don’t know why he can’t let things go. He should.
But it’s Diana who puts herself in a position of power and will not let him get the upper hand. She got into Yale also, but she tells him that she will not be going to there. Admitting that she lied about her LSAT was one of the things that she loved being able to say.
And then saying she wouldn’t go to Yale and would find another place – well, that’s interesting too. The way she tells him that she’ll find another school to go to – Harvard, Yale, Stanford – anything.
Steven challenges her for a second and asks if she’ll really change the trajectory of her life to avoid him. She sure would.
I think we all would to avoid you Steven.
