Emmett’s big secret is finally out in Happy’s Place Season 2 Episode 9 “Silence Was Golden.”
Back when Happy’s Place Season 2 premiered, fans were really excited for Bobbie and Emmett to take the next big step in their romance. But all of it was soured when it was revealed that Emmett knew about Isabella. Things only got worse in Episode 2 when Emmett decided to enter into a relationship with Bobbie without giving her the honesty that she deserved.

Now in “Silence Was Golden,” Isabella found out about Emmett’s secret from Takoda and immediately went to tell Bobbie. The devastation that follows was always going to happen. And it needed to happen for us to get to a place where Bobbie and Emmett find their way back to each other. Because when Bobbie found out, she came to realize that the foundation of her relationship with Emmett was based on a lie. And she can’t get past that.

Thinking about Episode 9, I can’t help but wonder about the time between Bobbie finding out and then breaking up with Emmett. She probably sat in her room thinking about the years that were stolen from her when it came to Isabella. Because we remember how angry Bobbie was in Season 1 when she first found out about Isabella. And part of it was because her father lied to her and stepped out on their family. But a part of it was because of the years she could have had with Isabella.
Talking about Isabella, she has the strength that I don’t know if I would have had during this revelation. Because she put her feelings aside in “Silence Was Golden” to ensure that her sister knew the truth. But you could tell when she leaned up against that locker after Bobbie asked her if she was okay, that she’s not okay. Like Bobbie, she’s probably thinking about the years that were stolen from her and that she could have had with her sister.
In thinking about what comes next, it’s obvious that Bobbie and Emmett are going to try to figure out their new normal. And that’s going to cause a little bit of tension. But what I’m really worried about is Isabella. She’s young and doesn’t have the same wealth of experience that Bobbie has in life’s disappointments. And Isabella never got to confront her father about the life that was kept from her. Now Emmett is there. And I think that she’s going to have a harder time facing him because of how close she’s got to him.

MORE: We interviewed the Happy’s Place showrunner about Gabby’s infertility storyline! And the reason behind it all isn’t what you expect.
Not everything was heartbreaking in Happy’s Place Season 2 Episode 9. Because this is a workplace comedy, the show always makes sure to have a B storyline that’s a little bit lighter but relevant. That storyline in this episode belonged to Steve, Takoda, and Gabby. It was hilarious watching Steve confront Takoda about his dreams. But in a way it kind of felt like it was soft launching the secret coming out but also it was us as the viewer worried about what was to come.
Gabby made the possible secret coming out even better by not even saying a word. I love all the actors on Happy’s Place but Melissa Peterman feels like she’s on a whole different level. She said so much even when she wasn’t speaking. And every single time that she passed by Steve and Takoda, I felt the weight of the secret lift up a little bit because it was so ridiculous.
Here’s hoping that these secondary storylines continue to lift up this comedy because relationships are shattered on Happy’s Place. And though I know that everything is going to be okay, I don’t know how we get to a point where Isabella feels a little bit more grounded after the secret or Bobbie feels ready to forgive Emmett in such a way that leads to them eventually getting back together. Because I do believe Bobbie and Emmett are endgame. The question is, how do we get there? And how much work needs to be done to repair broken trust?
Happy’s Place airs new episodes every Friday at 8pm ET on NBC.
