What do blueberries, an STI, and the Smurfs have in common? They all have a connection to the latest episode of FOX‘s Best Medicine! In “Eyewitness Blues,” Martin (Josh Charles) does his best to avoid Port Wenn’s annual Blueberry Festival and focus on his duties as the town’s doctor. However, the universe has other ideas. Best Medicine Season 1, Episode 6 achieves a very sweet balance between humor and heart.
For various reasons, I’m going to try a new format for this review. I think this episode is a good time to address the characters of this show directly and tell them some things. Here we go!
MORE: Relive the happenings in Port Wenn from last week with our review of Best Medicine Season 1, Episode 5!

Martin
OK, Dr. Best, an introvert like me can relate to your uneasiness about people. Especially during a small town festival. Like it or not, Port Wenn is your home now, and I can tell you like these people more than you let on. Sometimes. I know your job means a lot to you as well. Why else would you try so hard to figure out why Blue Barry, the winner of the blueberry pie contest every year, has blue skin? A person who looks like a Smurf is a lot of quirkiness, even for Port Wenn, but you always solve the medical mystery. You try to fight it, but you are exactly where you should be. One other thing, Martin: do your best to internalize your feelings for Louisa (Abigail Spencer). That will improve your life, too.
Louisa
Speaking of the kind schoolteacher, Louisa needs to hear a couple of things, too. Sweetie, you are a good person. I know breaking up with Sheriff Mark (Josh Segarra) messed with your sense of self, but you are capable of moving forward with your life. The blueberry pie competition was a good outlet for your efforts this week, and I was thrilled when you finally won. And I wasn’t the only one. I know the town was speechless at how the contest went down, but did you notice Martin was the first one to cheer for you? I did. It might be too soon for you to jump into another relationship, but just keep that in mind for the future.
Sheriff Mark
Sheriff, I like your inexhaustible, upbeat attitude. It never seems to slip. Even while you’re dealing with a breakup, or when you unexpectedly face something like an STI, as you do this week. That is who you are. It’s always there, underneath everything, even the horndog phase that got you that STI. Thankfully, the comedic talents of Segarra made this storyline funny instead of cringey. I’m glad the women you were with after Louisa got a chance to dunk you in the dunk tank at the festival, though. That was probably good for you. It can act as a reminder to stay the good guy that Louisa still thinks you are.

Elaine
Elaine (Cree), girl, I think George (Jason Veasey) was right when he said in the first episode of this series that you are a star. I’m always interested to see what idea you have for online content this week. You tried on your reporter hat for the festival, and though it started out shaky, you really hit your stride when all the scandals came out during the judging of the blueberry pie contest. So what if maybe your mom was your only viewer? You still gave your audience an engaging voice to lead them through it. I hope you find a way to achieve everything you want but stay in Port Wenn because the town won’t be the same if you leave.
Aunt Sarah
I would say the same thing to you, Sarah (Annie Potts). This week, you gave us a scare and made us afraid you also might not be around someday, in a completely different way. Let’s listen to everything Martin has to say about your health, okay? Watching legend Annie Potts faint is not a fun experience. Even if it’s fictional. Plus, your relationship with Martin has some growth to do as well. The final scene of the episode is a touching start for that. I want to see it continue for the foreseeable future.
“Eyewitness Blues” had me laughing and engaged. In fact, Best Medicine Season 1, Episode 6 is one of my favorite episodes of this show so far!
Best Medicine airs at 8 PM on Tuesdays on FOX and streams the next day on Hulu.
