Remember when I said last week that at some point, Matt would find out about Serena and Chaplain Steve? Well, that’s exactly what happened on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 14, ‘Happy Birthday Matty. I have been waiting for this reveal since the moment Serena and Steve started hooking up. Not just because I knew it would bring drama. I just wanted to see Matt reveal his feelings once and for all. And as expected, things got a little messy.
It’s Matt’s 1st birthday, not in the literal sense. Because Matt grew up on a homestead where his family didn’t believe in celebrating birthdays, this is the first time he’s celebrating it. And in true Matt fashion, he chose the most innocent way to celebrate it at a kids’ place called Laser Lounge. Basically, everyone from St. Denis is there. Unfortunately, this included Steve, who presented a problem for Serena.
The thing is, Serena’s been seeing Steve on the low for about two months now. The only people who were even aware of this were Bruce and Alex. We all know Serena is a private person, so she wasn’t broadcasting it. First, she didn’t want to hurt Matt. And second, because there’s always drama when you mix business with pleasure. When he walked in and planted a kiss on her cheek right in front of everyone, including Matt, it caught her totally off guard.

I fully understand Serena’s discomfort. She had previously told Steve to keep it on the low. But according to him, because she said, “Not at work,” and they weren’t at work, he assumed it was okay to kiss her. As she pointed out, even though they weren’t at work, they were still in a place surrounded by coworkers.
Once the cat was let out of the bag, things got awkward very quickly.
Sensing her discomfort and Matt’s, Bruce attempts to run interference. He decided to tell Steve that Matt had feelings for Serena. He also advised him to ease up on the PDA. I love Bruce for having Matt’s back. But this reveal did more harm than good. Steve decided to take advantage of the situation. While this was happening, Serena sought advice from Alex. Ultimately, she decided to go public with the relationship.
Unbeknownst to Serena, Steve had some plans of his own.

As I said in my review of St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 13, ‘A New Best Friend,’ I take back all the good things I said about Steve in my review of St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 11, ‘This Isn’t Bingo.’ After Bruce told Steve about Matt, he increased the PDA with Serena HARD. This display included him kissing her on the lips as Matt looked on.
I’m still not sure why Steve hates Matt. His energy towards him makes no sense. Matt has never done anything to him. He’s always been nice. Maybe that’s what Steve hates. Matt is nice. Some people are not used to someone being kind. They tend to think it’s all an act. I think that’s what Steve’s problem is.
Matt pretends to be unfazed by the kiss. But he’s not happy. He decided to channel his energy into another game of laser tag. Only this time, they broke into teams. And it became Matt versus Steve in more ways than one. As predicted, the laser tag game got heated and ended in a physical fight between Matt and Steve. I’m sure you can guess who I was rooting for.

In the aftermath of the fight, Serena has a realization. Steve is not the guy she thought he was. He’s a jerk. And she witnessed it firsthand. And it’s not just that he messed with Matt. It’s the fact that Steve doesn’t respect boundaries. Period. Serena was extremely clear about how she wanted to handle things. Steve went against her wishes. She tried to give him the benefit of the doubt by saying she’d be his girlfriend. He took it too far.
Serena deserves better. And I need her to learn that. She’s worthy of love from someone who sees her. That person is Matt. I also need Matt to admit he’s not over Serena. And he never was. It was sweet the way his face lit up when she called him on the walkie-talkie. That small gesture by her gave him the best 1st birthday he could’ve asked for.

- Oh Joyce, Joyce, Joyce. Google is free. You should have googled “Laser Lounge.”
- Is anyone surprised Alex would be intense about a game of laser tag?
- I can’t be the only one who thought Serena’s fit was giving Squid Game.
- Chaplain Steve needs a new profession. He is the opposite of what a Chaplain is supposed to be.
- Alex… the first rule of laser tag was literally “No running.”
- “Don’t curse. There are kids here!.” You tell him, Matt!
- Bruce came in with the assist for Matt during laser tag and took out Steve. I love their friendship.
- I’m still holding onto my Ron/Joyce relationship theory.

- Go Joyce go!
