When it comes to verticals, I think that we really need to have a conversation about continuity. It’s one one of those things that makes me take a step back and think that someone really was just over it. I hate that kind of moment. Yet when I watch CandyJar shows, I know that they have put a lot into their shows – making sure that they are both addictive and good. Falling for my Bodyguard is one of those shows that is addictive and good.
There is a formula for verticals and while I do love that formula, I also love when a vertical strays from the formula and gives me something new. Well, at least something that I haven’t seen. CandyJar is one of the best vertical platforms because they are going to make original content that they produce just like a movie. The continuity, the scripts, and the cinematography are going to be miles better than what others are doing.
And I can appreciate that.
Falling For My Bodyguard stars CandyJar staple, Joseph Purcell. The young actor has created quite a conversation around himself, making people stop and take notice. He’s tall, mysterious, strikingly handsome, and the sound of his voice will make you weak. He’s a presence and I do believe that it is hard to hold a scene against him.
Kyra Wisely stars opposite Purcell in the series, and it’s not to say that she’s bad in it. She’s not. I looked up how old she is and I do know that at 21, playing 18 shouldn’t be an issue. It’s that I’ve seen her play older so many times that I couldn’t believe that she was a senior in high school. Granted, Purcell as an early 20’s bodyguard is not believable too.
That all being said, if you take that out of the equation – what you get is a story that is at it’s very core – an escape. A young girl, Harmoni, is the daughter of a diplomat. Her father needs to make sure she is safe and so hires a body guard to move her to a new place and hide her from potential danger.
Who would have known that the people that she has to fear the most are teenagers? Sure, high school is a b**ch, but also it shouldn’t be. Harmoni is making friends and testing her limits, but smexy body guard William isn’t liking her choices. Then again, we’re not really into her choices either.
We do love Noah Andre, and seeing him as the bad guy is kinda hot. We love versatile kings. But him as a drug dealer and then kidnapping Harmoni – dumb move. It turns out that Harmoni’s friends are drug dealers who owe a lot of money. They figured out who she is and thought – why no and get a ransom. I guess they need a lesson in the why not to do something.
William isn’t going to stop until he gets Harmoni back. Gotta admire that. Then again, he has fallen in love with her. He had tried to fight it, but he was attracted to her and jealous when she tried to move on to someone else.
She’s never made a secret that she’s attracted to William. Though sometimes I thought it was to make him uncomfortable. I wasn’t sure. Well that was until an incident with a vibrator and what happened after that – I knew she was serious about him.
As per the usual in verticals – there was a kidnapping. This is why you don’t make friends in high school – they will betray you. Or you know they will try and ransom you to pay off their drug supplier.
Joseph Purcell and Kyra Wisely do have chemistry, but definitely not a chemistry that has me begging for them to be in more verticals together. Their chemistry feels mismatched, as if we’re forcing their characters to mean more than they do to each other. It was as if I was watching two teenagers make wrong decisions.
While I did love and appreciate that Purcell was taking on a role that wasn’t along the lines of his usual roles as a teenage heart throb, I have to admit that the whole prom aspect at the very end made me second guess him trying to break out of the teenage role.
We can’t be going to prom. Though if in his next role he does want to be a Dad, I am here for that.
Falling for my Bodyguard is a good series, that all being said. It’s enjoyable and an escape and isn’t that what one wants?
