Halfway through its debut season, Rooster has received an impressive vote of confidence. HBO has renewed the comedy series from Bill Lawrence & Matt Tarses and Warner Bros. Television for Season 2. The series premiere, which pulled 5.8 million viewers in the US, has been credited as “the most-watched freshman HBO comedy in over a decade.”
Bill Lawrence, co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer, celebrated the news by saying, “We are so grateful to Warner Bros. Television and HBO for being such great partners and to Casey, Amy, and Channing for giving us the opportunity to keep making this show with Steve and our amazing cast. It’s been a career highlight for both of us, but more for Matt than me.”

There’s Still Time to Catch Up on Rooster
For those who haven’t tuned in yet, Rooster follows an author named Greg Russo, played by executive producer Steve Carell, while he navigates a complicated relationship with his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive). It finds its scenic backdrop on the campus of a liberal arts college, Ludlow College, complementing the comedy’s efforts for the characters to learn lessons.
The show recently introduced Connie Britton as Elizabeth Stoddard, an alum of the school, philanthropist, Greg’s ex-wife, and Katie’s mom. Rooster also stars Danielle Deadwyler as Dylan, Phil Dunster as Archie, John C. McGinley as the college’s dean, Walter, and Lauren Tsai as Sunny. To reveal much more would spoil the great dynamics that continue to evolve in the show’s first season.
Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series, reflected an appreciation of the show’s ensemble in her statement about the renewal:
“It’s been heartening to feel the audience embrace Rooster, as we did when we first saw Steve, Bill, and Matt bring this character to life. Along with our partners at WBTV and Doozer, we’re looking forward to seeing what Ludlow’s Spring Semester has in store for this incredible comedy ensemble.”

We’re thrilled to continue this creative journey with HBO and Doozer.”
The series returns for another new episode this Sunday, at 10/9c on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. The rest of the 10-episode season will unfold weekly until the season finale on Sunday, May 10. Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer executive produce for Doozer. Tarses, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, David Hyman, and Steve Carell also executive produce Rooster.
