With Devil May Cry Season 2 almost here, you might need a refresher on where Season 1 ended. Because Season 1 set the tone for the show but also the stage for the upcoming war with Hell. Oh also it set the stage for the upcoming reunion between Dante and Vergil, which won’t be easy by any means.

So last we left off in Season 1 of Devil May Cry, Dante and Mary aka Lady, had defeated The White Rabbit. Dante had also learned that his brother Vergil was alive. So he proposed that they team up and go on a buddy cop adventure together to find Vergil. Unfortunately, Mary betrays Dante and injects him with something that makes him pass out. She thinks he’s too dangerous to be free.
Then a portal opens the sky and Mary realizes that this is far from over.
What follows is a flashback where the Vice President reveals he knows about Anders’ betrayal. The Vice President goes on about some holy mission and how the device The White Rabbit had will help them win it. Anders laughs in his face and then is shot and pushed out of the helicopter. And that’s when “American Idiot” by Green Day starts playing as the U.S. starts an invasion of Hell for reasons.
As the song plays, demons of all kids are killed with missiles. And it’s revealed that a building has been constructed in Hell to imprison the demons indiscriminately. Dante is also imprisoned by DarkCom, his sword and necklace separated from him as a “safety measure.” He is then contained and frozen in some sort of cryochamber.
At the end we return to the newly constructed building in Hell, someone having broken in and starting to kill the guards. The demons imprisoned are scared when they’re released from their cells. And the demon who broke them out transforms into their human half to reveal themselves to be Vergil, Dante’s long-lost brother.
Vergil declares that their freedom is due to Mundus, setting the stage for demons to side with Mundus after years of feeling oppressed by him because the humans are now a bigger threat.
