Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s aren’t done when it comes to his Monster true-crime anthology series. So far he’s done seasons on Jeffrey Dahmer, The Menendez Brothers, and Ed Gein. And for Season 4, he’s finally featuring a woman at the center of a true-crime story that people still haven’t really figured out: Lizzie Borden and the unsolved murders of her family.
When it comes to Lizzie Borden, it’s one of the most famous cases in American criminal history because it was never solved. Yes, Lizzie went to court for this and was accused. But she was acquitted and lived out her life traveling, dining, and attending the theater. That’s why it’s important to keep in mind that Murphy and Brennan’s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is just that: a story.
The murders are real. The Borden family was brutalized, with a hatchet and not an ax. But the truth about Lizzie Borden, we’ll never know.
The Synopsis
When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge. The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world—they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.
The Cast
Ella Beatty from If I Had Legs I’d Kick You will play Lizzie Borden. Charlie Hunnam, who just starred in Season 3 of Monster as Ed Gein, will play Lizzie’s father Andrew Borden. And Rebecca Hall from The Beauty will play Lizzie’s stepmother Abby Borden.
They’ll be joined by Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan, the maid that Lizzie was rumored to have romantic attachments to. And the cast is rounded off by Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Barden in unknown roles.
