Sisters. If there are two sisters that you should be paying attention to in the movie world, that would be Madeline and Violet McGraw. The two make movies together and though you may think that working with your family is a pain, these two love working together. While most of their movies seem to be horror movies, they recently released a movie – Double Trouble – that is more Oceans 13 meets Home Alone meets Vegas vacation.
In the movie, “two witty sisters in Vegas get tangled in a holiday heist and join forces with an ex-MI6 guard to outmaneuver a master thief and recover a diamond gauntlet before Christmas.”
Now, while that diamond gauntlet is ugly, it’s worth a lot of money. It also is on the arm of pop star Jumiper, played by Jake Griffo, who you may know from The Thundermans. By his own admission, he doesn’t spend a lot of time in the movie — he does make an impact in the movie.
Honestly, I liked the movie. I thought it was cute. The McGraw sisters always make an impact on their audience and this time is no different. The two make an impression as sisters who are in Vegas for the holidays with their parents and couldn’t be more different.
But isn’t that the joy of sisterhood? Being different, but learning about the person that you are related to.
But we must remember that Double Trouble is a heist movie, as well as a family bonding moment. So when sitting down with Violet McGraw and Jake Griffo, I had a lot of questions.
While f***, marry, kill may be an inappropriate question to ask, I changed it a bit. I asked, “
Okay, so if you two were pulled into a real Vegas heist, using the entire cast, who would be the mastermind, who would be the getaway driver, and who would get caught immediately because they can’t stop eating snacks?”
Violet said, “I’m not the mastermind. I think the mastermind would be maybe Andrew. I feel like he would be pretty smart. The getaway driver, not me because your girl cannot drive. I’m the snacking.”
Jake agreed with her on that. While we’d have to agree, especially in Vegas. Too many good buffets to sit at for that. That’s for sure.
Working in entertainment, one thing I have heard lately, from a lot of actors and people behind the scenes is that yes, a movies success is measured by the amount of money it makes, but it is also measured by the feedback that they get from fans. What matters to some is the success that it brings them personally.
I wanted to know for them what it was. McGraw said, “I think just executing kind of what you set out to do, right? I mean, making a movie is so hard and there’s so many moving parts to it. I mean, completing it is an accomplishment, but then it coming to fruition and the cut coming together and it being what the intention was is, I think that’s a success. Like you said, like the money aside, I think even for me, for my career aside, like at the end of the day, like it’s an art project. And so I think, you know, I think it was a major success.”
Griffo responded, “I would say for me, just getting to do something different and getting to make such great special connections along the way with such amazing people is a success for me.”
Now, I had to take the chance to ask about working with ones sister, and it’s not because I don’t love my sister, it’s because I also love my sister. But working with her all the time? Well we both value our space. I asked what is the hardest part, not really thinking that the definition of sisterhood is very different for everyone.
But Violet said, “Hardest part. I just think maybe we couldn’t, there was this one scene. It was so bad. We could not stop laughing because we’re sisters and just, we just look at each other and something’s funny because we can just read each other’s minds and we just start laughing. And, but like, besides that, I think it really made everything easier for me because we’re so close. Like we’re really close sisters in real life. So just us having that real sibling chemistry and bringing it onto the big screen is really cool and super special.”
Sisterhood is a very special thing. What I wanted to know though did they consider Double Trouble to be an action movie or a holiday one. They both agreed that it’s the perfect mix – which I loved. Because finding the perfect mix of anything is hard. As we all know. But any movie – well anything in life – is left open to interpretation.
Time with interviews goes by fast, so I ended by asked if they had one day off in Vegas whose residency would they go and see.
“Definitely Shin Lim.” Jake said, “Doesn’t he have a Vegas residency?”
Violet said, “Couldn’t tell you if that’s true, but that I’m going to copy your answer and say that because we didn’t get to see him, um, do any of his tricks on set.”
Double Trouble is out now.
