9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 1 “That Sinking Feeling” really wasted no time in having another person confuse Buck and Eddie as being a couple. And this isn’t to say that this entire review is going to be about Buck and Eddie. But when that screen went black, all I could think about was how what I’m seeing between Buck and Eddie isn’t in my imagination or a coincidence. Other people see it too. Again. Even if it’s a nurse thinking something toxic is happening between them…
But back to Buck and Eddie.
What we’re seeing with Buck and Eddie in the beginning of Season 10 is a building tension like we haven’t seen before. Because we’ve seen Eddie parenting Chris with Buck stepping in as a supporting father figure. But we’ve never seen Buck push back on Eddie and the way that he parents Chris because he didn’t think it was his place. Even though after everything they’ve been through, it is. So the upcoming fight that they’re going to have is about how Buck parents Theo. Or, to be more accurate, how Buck isn’t parenting Theo.

RYAN GUZMAN, OLIVER STARK
To be clear too, I don’t think that Eddie commenting on the way that Buck is not parenting Theo is coming out of left field or something that Eddie can’t do. (I need to make this clear because even though I love Buck, people online are a little too harsh if Eddie does anything besides look pretty and do water rescues.) Buck and Eddie are family. Chris is part of that family. And now that family has a new addition. And if there’s anyone that has the right to say something to Buck, it’s going to be Eddie.
Outside of the Buck and Eddie of it all, this whole volcano emergency is leagues better than the 9-1-1 Season 9 opening emergency where they went to space. It being on Earth means that everyone can participate in this emergency. Because the Season 9 opening emergency was too long and contained in a space that wasn’t conducive to balanced storytelling. Or goofy storytelling, because we’re talking about a volcano here in the middle of Los Angeles.
Everyone is working together like a well-oiled machine in “That Sinking Feeling.” Previously, Chimney had hesitations about taking on the captain role after the death of Bobby. Real hesitations that make sense because it’s a heavy job. But he seems to really trust himself as he leads the 118 to deal with a sinkhole that turns into a bigger problem when lava starts spouting out of it.

ANGELA BASSETT
Chimney isn’t the only one that’s confident and comfortable in their job. Ravi is capable and part of the team. Harry is learning and knows that he’s supported. And even outside of the 118, I loved seeing Maddie being a leading force in this investigation into what’s happening. Then there’s May in her scrubs, commiserating about the crazy things she’s encountered with Athena, who is going through her own struggles with her job.
This is also the part of my review for 9-1-1 “That Sinking Feeling” where I have to call out Athena. Because she’s not a rookie anymore. (Technically, I guess she is on the detective front. But she’s been a cop for decades.) That move she pulled going into that hole is something Buck 1.0 would do and that she would call him out for. Sure, she’s going to be fine. (Or I hope so.) And she’ll probably save the city from this volcano. But did we have to get to this point by making Athena do something uncharacteristic?
9-1-1 just had a volcano pop up in the middle of LA. Maybe I shouldn’t be taking this too seriously in the first place…
Additional notes about “That Sinking Feeling”:
- Harry sacrificing himself. You could’ve died. But at least it was heroic!
- So why didn’t Eddie need equipment to get into the sinkhole?
- At least he looked good!
- What’s this balloon brand? Survived a sinkhole and boiling water.
- Also, Maddie…. the blonde hair. Beautiful.
- That little necklace Eddie…. with the outfit.
- DID THE NURSE THINK EDDIE WAS ABUSING BUCK?!
- OMG.
- Sad. But also, another instance of them being confused for a couple…
- This whole aquarium incident is terrifying but interesting…
- Athena is about to solve this whole thing
- I know itttttt….
- A FIGHT ABOUT TO HAPPEN
- Oh, Chris down. Look… Buck isn’t parenting Theo. At all.
- Ughhhh this guy that hung up on Maddie
- I know I said that Athena can solve anything… but girl, don’t do this.
- This show is so cheesy. God. I love it.
