If there is one shopping mecca in New York (according to television) – that would be Barney’s. It feels like it has been featured in every television show and movie in the 80’s thru the aughts. We’ve read about it in books and we’ve always thought – just want to be able to afford something from there one day.
But alas, we’re still poor and can’t afford anything that would be in Barney’s. We wouldn’t be able to afford anything that you can order online. So it will be a dream and apparently it will be a dream that we get to watch on our screens. You see Amazon has ordered Bella from Barneys, a show coming from the minds of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. We know their minds are creative – after all they brought us all Gossip Girl.
The show is about, “Bella Baldwin, an outer-borough outsider with an eye for style, who lands a job in the stock room of the newly revived Barneys New York. When she talks her way into becoming a personal shopper to the store’s most notorious socialite client, she’s pulled into a cutthroat world of fashion and family secrets, and into the orbit of the heir fighting to save the family business.”
Amazon MGM Studios and Schwartz and Savage signed a first look deal last year and this is the first project under that deal.
Physical locations of Barney’s closed in 2020, after they filed for bankruptcy in 2019. Though there are no physical locations open in the United States, there are locations open internationally.
“We’re thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Amazon and are excited for what’s ahead,” Schwartz and Savage said in a statement. “The response to Sterling Point has been incredibly gratifying, and we’re so happy to be returning for a second season alongside creator Megan Park and producing partners LuckyChap. At the same time, the opportunity to build the fictional world of Barneys is a dream for us. Barneys was more than a store; it was a New York institution, a cultural touchstone, and a world unto itself. We’re so excited to open those doors along with our partners at Authentic Brands Group, and our fellow producers Susan Rovner and Rachel Kaplan, who we have worked with since the beginning of our careers.”
So until we can afford to travel internationally we’ll patiently wait to meet Bella at Barney’s.
