Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 4 puts Liz in a position where she has to balance her ambitions with her responsibilities to her family…at a time when Charles is being particularly difficult. We sit down with Allegra Edwards, who plays Liz, to talk about why her career matters so much to Liz, whether she and Charles can find their way back to each other, and the things she has discovered about her character as the season progresses. Ready?
Here we go!
Liz Has Finally Found Something That’s Just Hers

Liz’s professional ambitions are about more than getting a promotion. When we asked Edwards why having a job and a life outside her family is so important to Liz, she explained that her career is essential to her sense of self and her ability to feel fulfilled.
“I think Liz’s career is essential to Liz staying sane, actually,” Edwards told us. She pointed out that “it’s a relatively recent development in Western human history, particularly for women, to have the opportunity to pursue careers, climb the professional ladder, and feel they can contribute something beyond reproduction and domesticity and cleaning.”
For Liz, that opportunity is especially significant because, as Edwards explained, she has “way more experience on the other side of life than being a career woman,” which makes this new chapter particularly exciting for her. As the actress joked, “I think she’s very enlivened by it. No pun intended.”
For Edwards, Liz’s job gives her the chance to “feel like a whole person,” someone whose abilities and contributions matter beyond her responsibilities at home. She explained that it makes Liz feel “smart, needed, and powerful. Like she matters and what she does matters.”
According to Edwards, there’s also something satisfying about Liz knowing that “no one can do [the job] like she can.” After all, she has 500 years of experience behind her, and that “actually make her the most qualified person for her job” even if the people around her have no idea just how much she knows. And it must be “really fulfilling to be that good at something.”
Can Liz and Charles Finally Get It Right?

Liz and Charles’ disagreement in Eternally Yours Episode 4 reveals a problem we’ve been seeing from the start: Charles struggles to put anyone other than himself first, and to show his love for Liz.
When we asked Edwards whether she believes they can find their way back to each other as a couple, and what would need to change, she pointed out that “we’ve already seen enough clues that would indicate that Charles and Liz are looking at each other differently than they ever have.” She also think that “it’s a safe bet that the agent of change, Max, and also Max’s relationship with Emma is definitely playing a big part of that.”
By the end of the episode, Edwards sees “that there’s a lot of hope by the end of this episode. The fact that we see them kiss is a big deal. We make up in a connected way as characters.” For Edwards, that moment is a positive sign that something new is happening between Liz and Charles. Their relationship isn’t necessarily back where it was, but they’re beginning to see each other differently, and that creates room for change.
Still, Edwards isn’t suggesting that the couple’s problems will disappear overnight. She acknowledged that the new dynamic is encouraging, but also reminded us that “we wouldn’t have a TV show if we didn’t have conflict, right?” she said. “So it can’t all be good going forward either. You’ll just have to see.”
Liz’s Biggest Problem Might Be Herself in Eternally Yours

One of the most interesting things Edwards has discovered about Liz as the season progresses is how much guilt she carries. When we asked what she understands about her character now that she didn’t when she first started playing her, the actress explained that Liz’s desire to protect her coven is complicated by the fact that some of the risks they face stem from her own decisions.
“I think Liz is something that I would not have realized, but I definitely have now,” Edwards said, adding that we will “see more of this in future episodes.” She believes Liz “walking around with a lot of guilt” over the circumstances that have led people to join the coven, whether because she advocated for including them, made a mistake that forced the group to take someone in, or showed compassion by saving someone’s life.
Edwards explained that Liz feels responsible for what those decisions mean for everyone else. After all, “the more people you have to keep track of, the more that could go wrong.” And while Liz is determined to keep everyone safe, hidden, and integrated into the world around them, some of her choices have also put them at risk.
As Edwards put it, “even though she’s really intent on making sure that we are not exposed and that we are safe and that we are assimilating, acclimating, blending in, she’s simultaneously making a lot of choices that expose to danger.” The examples are already there. The group is bringing in a new vampire, and they live with a human woman and her sons. Edwards pointed out that “this is all because of Liz in many ways,” which leaves her with a sense that she has to make everything work because she is partly responsible for the situation.
“I think that there’s this motor of, ‘I actually have to make this work because this is sort of my fault’,” she explained. “[Liz] needs to make sure that she’s patching things where it was actually her that caused the hole in the wall.” Edwards explained that she didn’t fully recognize this part of Liz when she first started playing her, but it has become clearer as the season has progressed. At the time of the interview, they were filming Episode 12, and she was noticing those feelings of guilt more and more.
The Questions About Liz’s Past That Eternally Yours Has Yet to Answer

Looking ahead, Edwards would also love to see more of Liz’s life outside the family. Her first wish is to spend more time with Liz at work, where the character “could show off her abilities but also put her foot in her mouth.” Edwards enjoys seeing Liz be good at something beyond being “an excellent hostess and matriarch, so to speak.”
She’d also like to learn more about Liz’s personal life, including “her friends, her social circle, and her hobbies.” And one question in particular has been on her mind: how does Liz manage to put on her makeup without being able to see herself in a mirror?
“That’s a question I have,” Edwards admitted. She wondered whether Liz has some kind of permanent beauty as a vampire, joking, “maybe once you become a vampire, you just always have eyeliner. I don’t know.” It’s a detail she’d love the show to explore, even if the answer turns out to be as simple as vampire magic.
Beyond Liz’s career and everyday life, Edwards is also interested in learning more about Emma’s past. She’d love to explore “young Emma, pre-vampire Emma, and the mother-daughter relationship that Liz and Emma could have had.”
“There’s limitless possibilities in terms of what we have to explore,” Edwards said, expressing particular interest in whether Emma knew her parents were vampires when she was a baby and what their relationship might have looked like under those circumstances. “I am so deeply interested in that. I have a lot of questions.”
When we brought up the possibility of a second season, Edwards immediately shared our enthusiasm. “Wouldn’t that be great?” she replied.
For now, there’s plenty to explore as Eternally Yours continues. Liz is building a professional identity of her own, trying to reconnect with Charles, and carrying a growing sense of responsibility for the risks her coven faces. Edwards suggests that there’s still much more to discover about what drives Liz, both as a leader and as a person who wants a life that belongs to her. And we can’t wait for this roller coaster!
Eternally Yours Season 1 airs on Thursdays at 8:30 PM ET on CBS.
