We’re back! In Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 4 ‘Halloween,’ we discover that our favorite vampires don’t like celebrating this holiday—and for good reason. But they don’t have much of a choice when Mort has his first date with his crush, and Liz is aiming for a well-deserved promotion… all while trying to keep Charles in line. Ready?
Here we go!
Charles Loves Liz, But Does He Know How to Support Her?

Halloween definitely isn’t the best time if you’re a real vampire. There are too many people pretending to be like you without knowing a thing, and too much risk of being attacked by werewolves. So, we can see why Charles wouldn’t recommend the experience in Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 4 ‘Halloween.’ In fact, Liz’s boss was getting on our nerves, too. Still, that dinner wasn’t about him, it was about Liz.
Liz earned that promotion. She loves her job, and it’s important to her that everything goes perfectly that night. That should be enough for Charles to hold his tongue. But he doesn’t—at least, not entirely. It’s clear he tried, but as always, he ended up putting himself first, acting without considering the consequences… and he wound up ruining everything. But that’s just a symptom of what seems to be a much larger problem.
To Charles, this promotion is insignificant. Since they’ll eventually have to start over somewhere else, he sees it as… temporary. In short, he doesn’t think it’s worth the effort. And while he’s not technically wrong—they will end up starting over elsewhere—that’s not the point. The point is that it matters to Liz, it makes her happy, and it’s something she wants to achieve. Charles should support her and help her reach that goal. Because what’s important to Liz should be important to Charles.
And the truth is, it is. If Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 4 ‘Halloween,’ showed us anything, it’s this: if something matters to Liz, it matters to Charles. He’s capable of doing anything for Liz because he loves her. The problem is that he’s too impulsive, proud—and, yes, selfish—which means he doesn’t always know how to show it, often messing things up more than he gets them right. But the fact that he’s able to realize this and do whatever it takes to set things right for Liz makes it clear that there is a lot of love here, and plenty of hope that they might find their way back to each other.

Mort’s Story Shows How Cruel Beauty Standards Can Be

We loved seeing Jesse, Emma, and Max team up to protect Mort in Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 4 ‘Halloween.’ But I have to admit, this storyline left me feeling sad and a bit hollow. It highlights just how far we still have to go as a society. Their first instinct—with the exception of Max—was that this girl was trying to hurt Mort. It never even crossed their minds that she might genuinely like him. And when Max suggested that possibility, they dismissed it immediately.
That wouldn’t have happened if the girl had been interested in Henry. That’s a fact—as harsh as it may sound. Mort doesn’t fit the conventional beauty standards that society imposes on us. As someone who doesn’t fit them either, I know how difficult it is to be aware of that. It hurts. It hurts to look in the mirror and compare yourself to others, knowing that you “lose” that comparison. And it hurts to see how people treat you differently, and how experiences that come so easily to others are a struggle for you to attain.
But it hurts even more when the people who love you most make that reality all the more glaring. When the very people who should be your greatest source of support are the first to assume—without a second thought—that someone like you couldn’t possibly be with someone who fits that mold. That’s why Mort feels so disappointed in Eternally YoursSeason 1 Episode 4 ‘Halloween.’
Luckily, Mort has a family that actually supports him—which is why he possesses that overwhelming self-confidence I admire. And, even though they messed up, they showed him that they’re aware of it and that no one believes in him more than they do. They fought to set things right. And I love them for that—because being different is so much harder when your family does nothing but judge and criticize you.
That said, I’m reminded of a similar situation in Modern Family, though in that case, the girl was actually using Manny. In Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 4 ‘Halloween,’ everything was genuine—I mean, why wouldn’t it be? That’s quite refreshing and shows that we are making progress, even if it’s at a baby’s pace.
Still, playing devil’s advocate here, in a perfect world, no one would ever play with someone else’s feelings. But when you have a non-normative body, some people just want to humiliate you for it. That’s a harsh reality—which goes to show we still have a long way to go. So, I can’t really blame Emma, Max, and Jesse for assuming that’s what was happening.
PS: That girl was truly mean!
PS 2: Jesse needs to tell Phyllis the truth ASAP!
