Well, I guess it’s safe to assume this latest Flash spoiler means that Barry Allen will be returning to the present in a timely fashion? So that’s good (and not-at-all-shocking) news.
But Barry’s return to Central City won’t be picture-perfect paradise. Grant Gustin told us back in July at San Diego Comic-Con that Barry is going to have a difficult time when he returns from the Speed Force.
Now, it sounds like that trouble is going to transfer over into his relationship with fiancee Iris West, who will have spent six months believing Barry wasn’t coming back and having to take charge in his absence.
According to EW.com, Barry and Iris are headed for couples therapy in Season 4, which could win up being both incredibly significant for their relationship and also hilarious should The Flash return to its unique light tone (which was seriously lacking in Season 3.)
“Barry and Iris keep comically clashing inadvertently because she’s used to being in charge, and he’s used to being in charge, and so they wind up going to couples therapy to work through it,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told EW. “The two of them with the therapist is some of the funniest stuff we have ever done on this show, but it also leads to a deepening of their relationship.”
So where does this idea for couples therapy originate? Well, that’d be none other than Caitlin Snow, who herself has had her share of relationship drama.
“Caitlin has been through so much herself in relationships, and if anyone can offer advice, it would be her,” Candice Patton told EW. “She’s there quite often to give Iris advice on her relationship with Barry and how to move forward. It’s actually more her idea that they go to counseling and get help.”
While this couples therapy will surely add a humorous tone to The Flash this season, it’s also significant as it will give Barry and Iris some time to work through whatever issues have developed in Barry’s nearly six-month absence. After all, this is the year that Barry and Iris will be walking down the aisle, right?
The Flash Season 4 premieres Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 8/7c on The CW.
