It was such a pleasure to read your smart, insightful, Frank review of this episode.

As a black woman, I have been truly aghast/appalled/saddened/enraged/disappointed/sickened to read the ignorant, small minded, racist, non-apologetic, truly sadly southern mentality comments by the majority white female conservative fans of this show about this episode especially. Reading their mean spirited, completely heartless and unapologetically racist comments made my heart hurt and made me realize we truly have not come that far at all from the mindset of whites in the 1770s.

I have scoured pages to see if anyone has been able to summarize this episode with anything close to an intelligent, empathetic, acknowledgment of the horror that was and still is American racism in the form of slavery (back then) and continuing racism now, and all I found where comments from these women complaining about Jamie’s hair, or that “Claire didn’t have one nice thing to say about River Run” (!!) or minor changes between the book and the show or worse, pure outrage that a topic like a American racism and slavery was addressed at all.

It just boggles the mind. But it really should be no surprise, since these are the same women who voted for Trump.

Anyway all this to say thank you. And thank you also for acknowledging that not all POC pain is the same and that the black experience in this country is indeed very unique and different and far far worse that the discrimination faced by other non-whites POC.

Thank you so much for your words, Elise. I remember this episode as especially hard, to watch, and to read about after. Sometimes this show reminds me of the worst of us all, in the reaction to some things. I didn’t feel I could do much other than be honest about the failings of the show, the perspective it was bringing, and also – my own ignorance, despite my desire to understand. I wish the fandom at large could be better, but I’ll be dammed if I’ll become one more in a crowd of people looking the other way.
