Let’s talk Time Team – our OT3. Have you ever seen such a balanced friendship? What’s your favorite thing about the Rufus/Lucy/Wyatt relationship?
Lizzie: My favorite thing is that it doesn’t feel like Lucy and Wyatt have something and Rufus is only along for the ride, or that Wyatt and Rufus are friends and Lucy is just there to look pretty, or that Rufus and Lucy are friends and Wyatt is the guy there to protect them. It feels like they’re a cohesive team, all the time, and they care for each other – not in the same way, of course, but care for each other nonetheless. This is such a rarity on TV these days, if you have a team like this there’s usually only focus on the romantic relationship or the male friendship, and that’s it, and this show allowed us to also enjoy Rufus/Lucy friendship, and plenty of moments of the three of them just being a team.
Alyssa: Perhaps my favorite thing about Timeless is this OT3 relationship between Lucy, Wyatt, and Rufus. It’s something I wasn’t expecting, but once it was happening there was this undeniable pull that I felt towards this show. These are three strangers that were brought together by chance or fate (depending on what you believe), and they’ve developed a complete and balanced friendship that has transcended everything on this show. It wasn’t perfect, as no relationships are. But it was that moment following the Watergate episode where they worked through their issues and learned that they needed to trust each other — and that they wanted to trust each other — that really defined their relationship. The team never feels complete without one of them. We’ve seen instances where they’ve been separated, and there’s a noticeable difference. These three need to be together. But it also makes their reunions all the more emotional and powerful. These three started as acquaintances and have become family.
Lyra: The Time Team OT3 has made it glaringly obvious what other OT3’s are lacking or have suddenly lost in later seasons. (You know who you are!) This OT3 loves, respects, and depends on each other. They all have different abilities that complement the other, understand that, and utilize them as much as they can. Egos and protecting the damsel are put to the side because there is no damsel in this situation or sidekick. They’re all partners. My favorite thing about Time Team OT3 is when they reunite. Lucy and Wyatt, the obvious future romantic couple, don’t hug and leave Rufus out of it because he’s a sidekick. Oh no, everyone gets hugged! This is a family here who wants to reassure that every single member is ok.
Erin: My favorite thing about the OT3 is that they are always there for each other. They are like a family. They know they are going to fuck up, they know there are going to be things that go wrong, they don’t judge each other for it. They love each other. They respect each other. But I honestly believe that they would give anything and everything for each other. They are special.
Sarah: I won’t lie, this is the first show I’ve watched that’s had a trio or Team OT3 if you will that truly felt like all three people stand on the same ground in terms of character development, and storylines written for them. One of the most important elements of Timeless made clear from the start was how quickly Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus bonded and therefore rely and trust each other on their missions. No matter how crazy their missions became and it usually was insane let’s be frank, they learned to trust not only each other, but more important believe in their respective abilities to get the job done. I’ve never seen such a balanced friendship such as this, and I’ve loved it from the get go. My favorite part about them is simply how strong their friendship is, how they’ll fight tooth and nail if any one of them is in danger and never regard as one more important than the other. They’re in this together and I hope for a lot longer than one season.
Lindsay: I probably am repeating myself but they are the ultimate OT3. If you want a team on your side, this is it. As the season has gone on they have brought out the best in each other. They are not afraid of speaking up and putting each other in their place; Wyatt being trigger happy, Rufus spying on Rittenhouse’s behalf and Lucy’s blind vision to get her sister back. Initially these caused conflict but as they are put through these strange circumstances they are left to question, ‘What’s really important here?’. Survival. To not be alone. Looking back, that’s all we really want isn’t it?
Charles:One of my favorite things of season 1 had to be the chemistry and bond between Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus. Their partnership always felt real. They would argue with one another, joke around with one another and stand by/with each other. I always go to the example of when Wyatt took the machine to try to save his wife. Of course Rufus and Lucy knew it was a bad idea but they still stood by him. That’s what makes me love them so much. They have each other’s back through thick and thin.
While we’re at it – let’s talk Lyatt. Do you ship it? What is it about them that makes them such a good match? Do you think if (when) the show gets renewed, there’s a future for them? Give me all your Lyatt feels.
Lizzie: I ship it. I shipped it ever since the Pilot. Heck, I shipped it from billboards at SDCC. And I mostly ship it because the writing is so good. I mean, Matt and Abigail have the chemistry, that was obvious from the beginning and that was what got me on the Lyatt path, but the writers have also show that they can – and will – handle this relationship with the reverence and care it deserves. They’re not just going to put them together right away and make it a cheap thing of them just trying to rebound with each other, no, they gave them a solid background of friendship, of caring for each other, trusting each other, needing each other, without the romantic element being ever-present, and then – in the Bonnie and Clyde episode, introduced the possibility without going for it 100%. Which is just – I want to send DVDs of Timeless to a few showrunners who don’t seem to understand the art of the slow burn. Right now, I know they probably won’t be a couple next episode – and that’s perfectly fine. I don’t want them to be. I want them to continue in this linear, believable path that they’re on. I want them to come together not when it’s convenient, but when they are both ready for this to be the epic love story they both deserve. And I trust the writers to do it right.
Alyssa: I ship it. I ship hard. There was an instant spark between them in the pilot, and their dynamic has really flourished throughout the season. One of the beautiful things about their relationship is that they’ve really established this friendship that makes their relationship as strong as it is. There’s a trust that’s developed, there’s a connection that’s developed, and there’s a genuine care that makes my heart race. Lucy and Wyatt found each other in their own heartbreaks. It’s beautiful. Timeless is executing this slowburn the right way. It never feels forced or shoved down our throats. It feels progressive, natural, and undeniable.
Lyra: Do I think they will have a potential future romantic story arc? Yes. Do I want to start a tumblr and devote my heart and soul to reblogging Lyatt gifs and quotes? No. I’m a hesitant shipper who has an appreciation for the journey that they’re taking these two characters on. The writers are throwing out stereotypes and making these two trust each other by becoming good friends first in a trio. This is the kind of slow burn that works and doesn’t leave you feeling high and dry because they are first and foremost, friends. They have a bond that surpasses hungry looks and intense situations where the man uses his aggressive nature to save the weak damsel. Lucy is not a damsel and Wyatt is not hypermasculine. When (not if) Timeless gets renewed, there will be a future for them after his wife comes back, cuz let’s be honest, she’ll be back. And instead of making them weaker and making their bond deteriorate, I think it’ll make them stronger. Again, because they are first and foremost, friends who care, love, and respect each other above all.
Erin: I love them together, but I love even more that they are apart right now. Finally, someone gets the art of the slow burn. FINALLY I don’t have to watch instalove. I feel like they are getting to know each other. I am on board with Lyatt and the love foundation that they are building together.
Sarah: I am happily onboard the Lyatt ship headed for a wonderful journey called “the classic slowburn.” Honestly their chemistry and trust in each other has been wonderful to see unfold, but I’m glad the writers didn’t just jump straight into it either with them. After what Wyatt went through with his wife, and what Lucy dealt with losing her sister and having a random fiance stuck in her life I don’t mind in the slightest they are taking their time with these two. They need to come to terms with how their lives have landed after being introduced to time travel, but I definitely think there’s a future (and it includes romance) for them as well. The two of them may butt heads over what to do in dangerous situations in all the time periods they’ve visited, but the amount of respect and all out affection for each other has created a beautiful friendship that I would love to see blossom into more – just when it’s right.
Lindsay: Lyatt, Wucy, and whatever else they’re calling it… I’m on board. That being said, I am LOVING the slow burn. Give me the development, give me angst. For this ship, I am here for it. We know that Wyatt’s feelings towards his wife is still simmering in the background and that isn’t something that should be dismissed. I love that the writers are not forgetting that. Grief is an awful thing and Wyatt is still working through that, everyone is different.
Charles: I think I love them as a couple. I don’t think they should be a couple yet till Lucy is finally able to save her sister. What makes them a good match is they just connect. They challenge each other , respect each other, care for each other in that way you only do with a special someone. Now will Wyatt’s wife return if it happens throw everything for a loop? Possibly but what makes Lyatt a couple to root for is that first and foremost they are friends who care for one another. Whatever comes their way, it will not shatter that but only strengthen that relationship as it grows.
