The show has a very diverse cast and even though it mainly focuses on the Time Team, it paints a picture of a world where diversity is the norm, not the exception, where there are many different kinds of strong women and where toxic masculinity is the exception, not the norm. What does this mean to you, personally and why do you think Timeless has been sort of a pioneer in this respect?
Lizzie: I just …I look at the show, and as a woman, as a minority, feel like I can do anything, be any character, and that hardly ever happens on TV. I think this can be traced back to the writers, of course, and hopefully, to a changing idea of what people want to see in their TV screens, and I think that’s one of the main reasons why Timeless deserves a season 2- to keep lighting the way as far as diversity, modern gender roles and just …good characterization is concerned.
Alyssa: You explained it perfectly. That’s why this show is so much more than a television show. Timeless shows us a world that we should expect, where women and men are equals, and where accepting diversity as the norm is how it should be. It really brings me even closer to this show seeing that on screen. It’s funny that a time travel show can be more realistic than some of these contemporary shows because it shows us a realistic world — our world. And I’m thankful every day for that.
Lyra: You gave the answer in the question. The show makes me feel like diversity is the norm. In turn, I feel closer to the show, as if time travel was a possibility because the stories and the people in it look just like the people around me. It grounds Timeless for me in a realistic way that I’ve never felt another show do. Timeless is pioneering a more realistic picture of the world in their tale and hopefully inspiring other shows to do the same. I’m ready, willing, and able to commit myself to shows that have a strong respect for diversity, women, and tossing stereotypes straight out the window.
Erin: I think the questions says it all. It’s realistic. These aren’t people that I can expect to see in everyday life. I love and celebrate that Timeless makes me feel like I can be anything. Anyone. I can’t wait to see how that continues in Season 2.
Sarah: Honestly you kind of laid it out right there for me. This show is a breath of fresh air in a way that made me realize I didn’t know how used I’d gotten to the typical non diverse exposure I’ve had in my years watching television. Timeless is not the first time travel show I’ve watched, but it is the first to fully embrace the chance of showcasing not just different time periods, but how in the past how diverse the human race has always been. I feel like in modern times because there’s so much fight out there in the world to suppress it, it’s a reminder that diversity has existed as long as humans have and it’s not going away and I can’t begin to say how happy that makes me. It lends a realism to a show that otherwise would seem completely impossible given the time travel element, and I want to see it continue that portrayal of how open our world really is in Season 2.
Lindsay: I feel like I’ve already answered this question. It’s realistic. I can go out in the street and see these people. Timeless shows us that we can be anyone, a badass historian who fights back, a hero in a hoodie… we just need to be given the chance.
Charles: The show has a ton of respect for how it makes diversity seem normal. It makes the world seem more realistic than some shows that are set in the real world. Timeless is what a tv show should be in terms of a diverse cast and a much welcomed one in the tv landscape.
Finally, what are your hopes for a potential season 2? What do you want to see more of?
Lizzie: More Lyatt. More OT3. More Jiya – like, way more. I also want them to explore the Rittenhouse connection for Lucy, because Susana Thompson already gave me chills in that last scene, imagine what she can do in a season. Also, I want more of an exploration of Wyatt’s issues – if that means the return of Jessica, so be it – and a little more of Rufus’ family. I just want more of what this show has been giving me so far – and I trust the writers to take me in the right direction, so basically, what I want is for them to be given the chance.
Alyssa: I’m really hoping that we get to learn more about Lucy’s mom’s involvement in Rittenhouse and ultimately what Rittenhouse intends to do with the Mothership. Rittenhouse looks to be the kind of Big Bad that will have its fingerprints throughout this entire series (however long it runs), and the potential for season two is huge given where we left off. I want to see more of Rittenhouse, to attempt to understand their intentions and where they’re coming from. I’d also like to see more development for Jia following that finale where she was seemingly transporting between two different time periods. Um, explain please! Then you have Flynn, who feels betrayed by Lucy after she was tracked and Flynn arrested. You know he can hold a grudge and exact revenge. I’m curious to see how that plays out. And of course I want to see more development between Lucy and Wyatt on a romantic scale. Continue the slowburn, but also start to explore that possibility of what could be. Put them in situations where they’re forced to confront their feelings. Maybe even a kiss that’s not inspired by the mission. Also, I want to keep exploring these cool time periods. It’s the coolest history lesson there is (next to Hamilton.) Just more. Come on, NBC. Give us more.
Lyra: Here’s hoping that Jiya can use the fact that she’s suck in two time zones to slip into different time zones. If the show writers can make me believe that that ball of steel can hop around time unnoticed, then they can do this too. Also, I want Wyatt’s wife to come back. Not because it’ll keep him and Lucy apart and delay their romance. Well a little because of that. But because I want to see the kind of man Wyatt was before her death and how it would shift his priorities with the team. And lastly, I want to see more of Lucy and her mom. Now that we know she’s part of Rittenhouse, things will get even more complicated in the fight to get Lucy’s sister back!
Erin: With that ending all I can say is I want to find out more about Lucy’s parents and her heritage. I need to know how they are part of Rittenhouse and just how deep her family goes into Rittenhouse. I want Wyatt’s wife to come back. I want to keep watching the art of the slow burn. I want to see how that affects Wyatt and Lucy. I want to see Lucy’s sister come back and see how that shifts Lucy’s motivation. But I need answers after that cliffhanger.
Sarah: First off please don’t leave that cliffhanger out there anylonger than the first five minutes of Season 2. I really want to know how far back Lucy’s family goes with Rittenhouse. I am excited to see Jiya get more involved with the Time team, and that she’s alright she has to be ok? I want to see more of Wyatt’s past, and of course more time traveling adventures with my amazing OT3! There’s so many more time periods they can go visit, and frankly I hope NBC gives this show (and my trio) the chance to take those trips in the fall.
Lindsay: I want to know the aftermath of that darn cliffhanger! I still cannot believe that Lucy’s mum was part of Rittenhouse the whole time. I want to know more about the history of Rittenhouse. Still a huge mystery, more answers please! I want Wyatt to get the closure he needs with his wife, I feel like this could be a blocker on his development. I want to know what’s going on with Jiya, it’s like she’s in an episode of Fringe! There’s so much to look forward to in a season 2 and I miss my ot3. Bring them back, please.
Charles: First resolve the cliffhanger!! Then I’d like to see the time team focus on fighting back against Rittenhouse and work on saving Jiya. I’m very worried about her! Even though the Jiya thing could lead to some very interesting times (and places) for our team. Most importantly, I just like to see the characters grow and evolve. They have so many more places to take these characters and I can’t wait to see where they go next! Please NBC, give us all a season 2.
