‘Supergirl’ SDCC 2017 Interview: Katie McGrath Talks Importance of Kara & Lena’s Friendship

When it comes to the introduction of new characters in a flawless way, Supergirl was at the top of its class as it introduced several significant and wonderful new faces, including a woman with an infamous last name: Lena Luthor. Over the course of the season, we watched Lena’s struggle with her Luthor name, as well as fell in love with her presence. And there’s plenty more on the way.
We spoke with Supergirl star Katie McGrath at San Diego Comic-Con last month, where she gushed about her love for Kara and Lena’s friendship, as well as teased Lena’s continued struggle with the “Luthor curse.”
Strong female friendships, unfortunately, are a rarity on television. We don’t get nearly enough of women supporting women for all the right reasons. But one of television’s best female friendships this past season was the friendship between Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor. There’s a genuine care, a genuine respect, and a genuine connection there. In fact, McGrath’s favorite part of that friendship is supportive Kara and Lena are of each other.
“In their eyes they can do no wrong,” McGrath said. “And I think that you don’t get that a lot in TV. You don’t the idea of proper, females supporting each other, not being catty, not being bitchy, not having any other agenda other than ‘I just want you to be okay.’ That, for me, is the most important part of their relationship is about the other person just being alright.”

But as we head into season 3, McGrath said that Lena is fearful of what the repercussions of the finale might have on her friendship with Kara. Lena was a big part of unleashing the lead on Earth to rid the planet of Daxamites – and ultimately, Mon-El was forced to leave as a result.
“Lena feels more guilty because of what she did to Mon-El,” McGrath said. “When it comes to her relationship with Kara, she’s very worried that the fact that she played a part in sending Mon-El away has damaged their friendship. For Lena, the most important relationship she has at the moment is with her best friend…Her relationship with Kara is very important.”
