The long awaited trailer for Dark Phoenix, starring Sophie Turner, has just landed and it looks lame. Before you go off wailing about how I don’t know anything, let’s clarify that I’ve enjoyed X-Men for the longest time. From the comics to the cartoons, I’ve been all for X-Men. I even watched the 2000 X-Men with those terrible wigs and the 2016 Apocalypse movie where Oscar Isaac was barely recognizable. So when I tell you that the Dark Phoenix trailer looks lame, you’ll understand that it comes from a position of loving this world and the characters in it.
Sophie Turner, for all the amazing work she’s done on Game of Thrones, is lackluster in this trailer. Her connection with Scott is more of a fizzle than a spark or the flame that we know from the comics. The trailer gives us no idea what she’s doing besides going to Magneto, because he’s somehow got all the answers, and flipping cars over with her “out of control” powers. Honestly, I don’t see the out of control in Sophie Turners Dark Phoenix. This part of her was always terrifying to me, something that all should fear. I don’t get that all from this trailer or Turners performance.
This trailer also features Charles and Erik doing the same old dance. Charles does something that he thought was for the greater good. Woah, surprise, it didn’t work. Erik is off in the woods or something, living the good life, before the X-Men come to him for help. Shit spirals out of control and then he dons his helmet AGAIN, probably telling himself it’ll be the last time when we all know it won’t be. See, same song and dance.
Quiet frankly, the only saving grace of this poorly put together trailer that looks like a fanvid made in fifteen minutes, is that Summer Fontana is starring as young Jean Grey. This talented young actress knows how to play intense, crazy, scary, and everything in between. There’s no doubt about it that her flashback scenes will be memorable as hell and the start of a great career in Hollywood.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
