In preparation for season 2 of The Umbrella Academy, and because we need to fill spots on Sundays, I’ve made the executive decision to put together a list of books that characters from currently airing, coming soon, or finished airing ages would actually read. Strap in because things are going to get weird for Vanya Hargreeves, played by Ellen Page, and what she’d read!
1. Why Can’t We Get Along?: Healing Adult Sibling Relationships
Why: After the way that season 1 ended, Vanya has a lot of relationship building that she needs to do. And I’m not just talking about Allison, who deserves a huge apology and should give one to Vanya in return. I’m talking about the rest of her siblings who decided to lock her up, leading to the end of the world.
2. The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook: A Proven Way to Accept Yourself, Build Inner Strength, and Thrive
Why: Vanya needs to work on her self-worth. She’s more than just a super powered sibling who didn’t know she had then in the first place. And she’s more than that lonely and downtrodden woman we met in season 1. And even though she’s stuck in a situation she doesn’t like, this is an opportunity to work on herself and discover who she really is. And I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready!
3. The Superhero Handbook: 20 Super Activities to Help You Save the World!
Why: We know this is a bit cheesy and might belong in a children’s shelf rather than a superpowered woman’s, but the thought counts. Big time. Vanya has powers that she never learned how to control and she missed out on core teachings when she was younger because her dad is the worst. This book can brighten her day and start her off on the right foot.
4. The Great Book of Texas: The Crazy History of Texas with Amazing Random Facts & Trivia
Why: Being stuck in Texas sounds like a pain. Being stuck in 1960’s Texas is just worse. That’s where history and trivia books come into play! With this book Vanya will be ready and set on how to act and behave in Texas while slowly but surely fighting for her rights, that of her families, and the new one she formed in the 1960’s.
5. Eight Dates: To keep your relationship happy, thriving and lasting
Why: According to pics posted by Netflix, by accident for sure, Vanya and the woman she’s staying with are in some sort of relationship. We’re still not clear on what level of relationship they are to each other but the fact remains that Vanya is smooching someone. And I know that Texas in the 60’s wouldn’t be forgiving about a gay couple in their midst. So maybe this book will help them jump start their relationship!
The Umbrella Academy season 2 premieres July 31st on Netflix.
