Listen, 2020 was a shit year. It has felt like its been March all year. However, there have been a few bright spots in 2020, music is one of them. With artists at home not being able to tour or work on a lot of other projects, they have turned to recording. And we have recieved the fruit of their labor. These are a handful of songs that made us happy in 2020, brought us some bright spots or just gave us a semblance of emotion other than numb.
LEVITATING BY DUA LIPA FT. DABABY
This celestial love song has such a feel good vibe. The poppy groove of “Levitating” makes us feel so energetic and it’s great to listen to when you’re taking a cruise or just alone in your house and feel like dancing. With lyrics like “I had a premonition that we fell into a rhythm where the music don’t stop for life,” it’s no wonder we have to dance wherever we are when this track comes on.
WATERMELON SUGAR BY HARRY STYLES
Ahh yes, the song that had a music video dedicated to touching. “Watermelon Sugar” was supposed to be the song attached to a wildly adventurous summer for all us Harry fans, but the pandemic had other ideas for us. That’s okay, we still had this song on full blast on our way to the grocery store to hunt for toilet paper.
GOLDEN BY HARRY STYLES
Yup, we’ve got another Harry Styles track on this list. We couldn’t have a list about songs that made us happy in 2020 without adding this sunshine song. “Golden” is another feel good song that makes us smile. We don’t know what it is about this song but, it really does make us feel like we’re in a bowl of sunshine. It’s a great song and you can listen to it while cruising as the sun is going up or as it’s beginning to set.
PLASTIC HEARTS BY MILEY CYRUS
“Plastic Hearts” by Miley Cyrus is such a fun song. Her whole album, Plastic Hearts, is actually. Anyway, this song has been on our repeat list since it was released. The whole of 2020 has felt like a giant black whole and this song describes that perfectly. It’s relatable in that aspect, it has great music and evokes emotion.
RAIN ON ME BY LADY GAGA FT. ARIANA GRANDE
This song is all about healing and boy do we need it. It’s about persevering through your tough times and finding comfort in the fact that things will eventually get better. It’s a dancey track and the combination of Lady Gaga and Arianas vocals makes this track an ultimate hit.
CARDIGAN BY TAYLOR SWIFT
Taylor Swift is a master at evoking emotions and imagery in her writing. “Cardigan” from Folklore is no different. This song evokes so much emotion and I think we can all say we have experienced this kind of heartbreak at some point in our lives. Anyway, it brings happiness because it is relatable and is like a warm cardigan.
WILLOW BY TAYLOR SWIFT
“Willow” is pretty much the companion piece to “Cardigan”. This song is relatable as well and the imagery again is so on point. Taylor just has a gift and “Willow” follows “Cardigan” on our repeat list. It has such a nostalgia vibe to it but the sounds it invokes make you feel safe and just wrapped up.
EVERMORE BY TAYLOR SWIFT FT. BON IVER
“Evermore” might not be the happiest song, but is sums up 2020 so well. Its just…Taylor describes being stuck in place and not being able to move forward or if what we are going through is worth it. It reminds us to look at the happy memories and then at the end of the song the lyrics “this pain wouldn’t be for evermore” – that describes being able to heal. Taylor is such a talented writer who can capture a thousand thoughts and moments and put them into a song.
THEREFORE I AM BY BILLIE EILISH
Billie Eilish has been a popular artist in the last couple of years. “Therefore I Am” is one of our favorites because it’s essentially a song that has a message combination of fuck you and zero fucks given. Those are phrases that we try to live by.
PRISONER BY MILEY CYRUS FT. DUA LIPA
Miley and Dua Lipa on a song? Fuck yes!!! This is a song that has been in the making in our hearts forever. Two of our favorites collabed and the result was fire. “Prisoner” off Miley’s Plastic Hearts is one of the best songs on the album. It’s about a love that you can’t control – that takes over your whole being. You are a prisoner. “Prisoner” has a catchy as fuck beat and two talented queens. Of course its on our list for songs that have made us happy in 2020.
KINGS & QUEENS BY AVA MAX
Ava Max is one of the artists that is a dark horse. She is just starting to get the light shined on her. The message of “Kings & Queens” is basically that Queens don’t need no King for anything. That is a message we can get behind.
