A Discovery of Witches decided to go all “hold my beer!” when it comes to how powerful Diana Bishop is. She had a freaking phoenix come out of her! Who can say that? Not us! “Oh, what’s your creature Lyra?” “A snail?” “How lovely. I’ve got a phoenix!” (Basically what I imagine a conversation with Diana would go but probably not because witches, vampires, and daemons aren’t real. Or are they?)
Back to Diana. She did what she had to do to protect herself, her child, and their future. So if Kit and Matthew’s sister want to play games, oh we’ll play games. Games where one of you fears being turned into a good ol’ roast and the other watches from their vantage point with a phoenix by their side. Personally, I’d be on the phoenix side but Kit and the sister were fools who thought Diana wasn’t that powerful. She is.
We do have to talk about how the power influenced Diana. She was becoming consumed by it during the phoenix bit of A Discovery of Witches. We mean, who wouldn’t? It’s a giant phoenix who just so happens to be on fire. And that power, it tempted her to end both of these creatures lives as a means of protecting herself and her unborn child.
This temptation runs along the same lines as Matthew and how he gets lost sometimes to the hunger of his being. Most of the time Diana pulls herself and Matthew out of it. But this time she was reminded by an other that Kit and Matthew’s sister were tortured souls who will be punished enough by just living. And there’s no doubt that as Diana comes into her powers, that she’ll need Matthew to pull her back and ground her like she does for him.
Another powerful figure that we wanted to talk about was Queen Elizabeth. We had her pegged wrong from the very start. We thought she was kind of in love with Matthew and testing his bond with Diana due to jealousy. But everything that she did was for her people. Even questioning her Shadow and his commitment to her was grounded in her need and want to protect her subjects from everything that she could.
Finding out that her legacy would last an eternity must’ve been a relief and something that gave her peace. She is now and forever will be a changed woman now that she knows the reach of her power and legacy. No one else can say they have that kind of peace that Matthew gifted her with. And now that Diana and Matthew are one step closer to returning to their future, I don’t think anyone else will be bestowed with such a gift.
And finally, let’s talk about someone who had a legacy and threw it away for love; Kit. Love is powerful, there’s no doubt about that. But when it becomes powerful enough that you think the best bet is to kidnap your loves wife…then we’ve got a problem and that’s where the line is crossed. We wanted to like Kit. We wanted to cheer for him and have him succeed. But he did himself dirty and will suffer the consequences for it.
Everyone who crosses Diana and Matthew will have their lives changed. Some for the better. And some for the worse. But forever changed they will be. And now that Diana and Matthew are bonded, in the deepest and most intimate of ways, they will be an unstoppable force who see each other for who they are and love each other no matter what. Indestructible they are, no matter what creature or trick of fate that they cross.
That’s what Bishmont truly are on A Discovery of Witches.
