Promising Young Woman is Officially a Five-Time Oscar Nominee! After the success at the Golden Globes, they deserved these nominations. We had the privilege of chatting with its star Chris Lowell about his experience in this movie and his thoughts on Al, his character, as well as wishing him the best of luck with these Oscar nominations that have been announced today. Ready?

Chris’s character, Al, is a gray character at best. So we wanted to know what it was like for him to play this character, what he learned from him, and how he put himself in Al’s shoes. And you just have to read what he told us.
“It was a challenge. This character and his actions… I think the easiest way to do it was to not know where the scene was going and to just try and go into the scene thinking of him as a good person who has maybe made some mistakes in his past, but has become a more morally sound individual and is under no expectation that this scene is going where it actually ends up going. So that was that was a real challenge to sort of find. But but I would really just sort of go into each take with Carey, assuming that my character was a good guy, and then let her reveal to me my own monstrous behavior until I become a monster myself”.

Promising Young Woman has really emotional scenes, and Chris’s character Al is no exception. We were curious to know what was the most emotional scene for Chris. That scene that put a lump in his throat and in which he got so deep into that it felt too real. And Chris completely satiated our curiosity as he gave us a good answer.
“Yeah, it was definitely an exhausting experience to shoot. But Carey is such an incredible professional and had such a you know, it was a fun challenge to take, because you always want to be in working with someone as talented as she is. It’s a really liberating experience. And it’s just the two of us, you know, it’s just the two of us having to hold you in suspense for almost 12 minutes. And that’s not easy. And it’s a great acting challenge. And, you know, that adrenaline rush is part of why you do it, you know?”

As we have mentioned before, Al is a rather gray character and that, of course, doesn’t leave anyone indifferent. We all have opinions about the character and his chances of redemption … or not. But we wanted to know Chris’s personal opinion on this. Does he think Al can be redeemed? Does he think there is something good in Al? We could only listen carefully to his response because it is fascinating.
“That’s an interesting question. I actually think there’s a lot of good in a lot of these people. I actually think so. Tragic about a lot of the men portrayed in this film is that they have used their goodness, they’ve used this thing that people like about them as a weapon to get what they want. They’ve essentially poisoned their own well of their own good. They’ve taken what is like the most wonderful side of themselves and used it to justify very deplorable behavior”.
