Welcome back Nancy Drew fans! We have reached the finale in “The Echo of Lost Tears” and boy what a freaking wild ride it was! Nancy’s body is still being held captive by the Wraith and the Drew crew has to gather all their wits and supernatural abilities in order to keep Nancy alive. Nancy meanwhile, comes to a realization regarding Gil, Ryan moves in with the Drew’s, George and Nick decide on their future together, and a new super villain is introduced, setting up a new foil for Nancy next season. There were so many twits and turns that at times I had trouble keeping up, however, the final moments of the episode blew my mind! We have a lot to talk about in the finale episode of Nancy Drew, so lets dive on in.
Kill the Wraith and Save Nancy

The Wraith has a mega hold on Nancy, and is not letting go anytime soon. Poor Nancy looks like she has been hit with a baseball bat, and ran over by a car several times. Homegirl, is dying and her friends feel helpless to save her life. Carson and Ryan finally acknowledge the supernatural draw to their town and assist the Scooby gang in taking out the Wraith once and for all. It was a very sweet moment, everyone working together in the claw to try and save Nancy, and Hannah was back at the museum trying to locate a spell that would tell everyone how the Wraith was created and hopefully how to stop it. Teamwork makes the dream work guys!
Nancy, through all of this has the mindset, or realization that Gil has been assisting the Wraith in sucking her soul, kinda. Gil was not intentionally trying to hurt Nancy, but he is an abuser. He is emotionally abusive to her, he undermines her and puts her down a lot actually. Nancy realizes that abuse doesn’t always have to mean a black eye or broken rib, it comes in many forms and so she lets Gil go. For a moment I thought he might hit her, but he simply tells her that will regret letting him go. #boybye Good work Nancy, one down, and one to go!
Since the Wraith feeds off fears, and negative feelings, Nancy knows she has a lot to overcome if she wants to survive. Facing your trauma’s head on, is difficult, but Nancy will have to, if she wants any sort of closure and peace. Hannah phones to let them know a blood ritual will have to be performed in order to summon the echo of the past, and the origin of the Wraith’s curse. I just rolled my eyes, and shouted “Oh course there’s a blood ritual!” Nancy might want to set up a blood bank just for herself, with all the blood she has let this season!
Once in the woods, the ritual begins and we learn the women and white banned a former member named Temperance from entering the town of Horseshoe Bay ever again, because she had gone rogue and was now evil, like Darth Vader. Temperance is very a very powerful witch and she built some kind of contraption that will release her vengeance on the women in white. What she ends up creating is a baby groot, that grows into the Wraith and lives in the woods, Temperance leaves furious because she still cannot get through the barrier but the baby Wraith can. It was all very weird to me, and honestly Temperance was a far more interesting character then the Wraith, but I digress. Nancy passes out, and is led to the upside down where she has to face all her past traumas. Yikers!
Own Your Shit

“The Echo of Lost Tears” of Nancy Drew, was all about facing your trauma’s and owning them. Nancy has a lot to confront, her childhood trauma, of feeling like an outsider, the trauma of losing her mother at a young age, and the trauma of finding out she was adopted and her paternal grandfather tried to have her killed. All of these instances would be a lot for anyone to handle, so it’s fitting when Nancy’s goes to the upside down that she confronts these versions herself head on. First she confronts who she could have become if she would have been raised as a Hudson instead of a Drew, then she confronts her younger self, and how alone she felt most of the time, finally she confronts the idealistic part of her self that wanted everything to be perfect.
Life is not perfect. Life is messy and hard, and unfortunately can have some trauma. I’ve had of trauma’s Nancy so I feel your pain in having to confront them and sit with them for a while. Since the Wraith lives of negativity and depression, sorta like the Babadook, Nancy realizes that in order to live and overcome, she will have to confront and take her power back. Good for you Nancy! I loved that she told the Wraith all of the iterations of herself were parts of her, and she could carry them with her, but still be a productive person and a forgiving loving person. Kudos writers.
Just when I thought we might end “The Echo of Lost Tears” on a peaceful note, we get a shot of the woman Nancy meet earlier in the episode, the Scooby Gang, used her land to do the blood ritual because she is a Hudson descendent. When Nancy first encounters her, she is very rude to her, but agrees to let her do the blood ritual at her farm. I thought she was kinda cagey and looked evil but I was trying not to judge in case she was a red herring. Turns out this bitch was Temperance Hudson! Temperance had kept herself alive for like 100 years and had been living on this farm as someone else! WTF! Wait. Seriously?
Nancy’s great aunt times 8 is still alive and stole some of Nancy’s blood to make her self young again like the damn witch from Snow White! You guys, she took a bath in blood and when she stepped out she was young again! My jaw was on the ground. Temperance jotted Nancy’s name down in the family tree information she keeps and marched her ass back to Horseshoe Bay ready to break down that barrier. Can I just say I’m excited for Temperance as a villain, she looks fabulous, she dresses fabulous and I know her interactions with the Drew Crew will be worth while. I for one cannot wait until next season. Until then ya’ll!
