Roswell New Mexico episode 3×05 “Killing Me Softly With His Song” left us with a crazy cliffhanger. Just to refresh your memory, Max got home to find an unconscious Maria bleeding on the floor. Maria had gone there to find Kyle who went to see Max. At the end of the episode, it looked as if Kyle was about to be attacked by some goon in an alien mask. Once Max got home, Kyle was gone, and we had no idea whether he was taken or just left before Maria got there.
Alrighty, we think we covered everything.
Now let’s get into the episode!
We don’t really know where to begin because as season three has gone, this one was another doozy.
Going It Alone
In this episode of Roswell, New Mexico everyone gets to experience what Kyle and Maria have to go through all the time. Because Kyle is missing, and Maria is in a coma, the entire gang is feeling totally lost. The shoe is now on the other foot because they are the ones who need to figure out how to save both. Isobel gets into Maria’s head to figure out what happened and to get her to wake up from the coma. Both Rosa and Liz cannot figure out why Maria is in a coma. The only thing they can deduce is it’s a side effect of her brain degrading from all of the visions she’s been having.
As Isobel works to reach Maria in the mindscape, Max and Michael try to figure out what happened to Kyle. The clues they have are a bloody shovel and an electrical surge that knocked out a radio tower. Michael ends up finding shattered pieces of the radio Kyle’s dad Jim Valenti owned. He’s having a hard time figuring out the connection, so he has to reach out to Alex. We admit we were stoked for this reunion because we have been missing our Malex. The two of them were radiating sexual tension especially when Michael used his powers to shut Alex’s car door when he tried to leave.
Alex has been working with Director Ramos at Deep Sky and we hadn’t seen him, or Ramos since the Lockhart Machine was activated. We still don’t have an answer to whether the Lockhart Machine is good or bad. What we did find out is that Ramos can’t be trusted. Turns out he’s Kyles’s uncle. Not only that, he also has one of the radios like the one Jim had. Oh, and he’s also a terrorist? And apparently, he had a run-in with Kyle and he’s the reason Kyle is missing. Yeah, our heads are spinning too.
The problem with season three of Roswell, New Mexico is that it’s doing too much too fast. We get that we need some stuff to keep us interested but the storyline of Ramos being Kyles’s terrorist uncle is a little, umm…much? Now that Alex has figured this out, his life is in danger and clearly the people working for Deep Sky are in danger as well. We don’t know what Ramos’s endgame is, but we know it is not good.
Invasion Of The Jones
So, all through the episode Max was acting strange. He was still pushing Liz away despite her attempts to reconnect with him. We just assumed it was because he could not bear to be around her since they’ve been broken up. Boy, were we wrong? The reason Max had been acting strange was because, Max isn’t Max at all. He’s Jones. Yup, Jones pulled an Invasion of the body snatcher’s and took over Max’s body.
We knew that ending in Roswell, New Mexico episode 3×05 “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” was too clean. And we knew Jones could not be trusted! We really did predict that Jones “healing” Max would lead to a body switch. Can’t say we were too surprised that’s exactly what happened.
Roswell, New Mexico knows how to deliver a gut-punch jaw dropping moment. We admit, this episode had its slow moments, but the end just hit us, and our brains are still processing the last few minutes of it. Isobel, Rosa, and Liz all figured out at the same time that Max wasn’t Max but when they did it was too late. Early in the episode, while Liz was visiting with Maria, she found an alien handprint on her scalp. She confronted “Max” about it and asked if he had tried to heal Maria. He made up some bullshit lie that he touched her forehead when he put her head on a pillow, but he did not heal her.
The fact that Liz even believed that lie doesn’t say much about what she knows about Max. I mean, how many times has Max probably put someone’s head on a pillow? I doubt he left an alien handprint doing a simple task like that. Isobel and Rosa were finally able to get to Maria inside the mindscape. They didn’t actually get in contact with her; they got into her memory of the night she and Kyle were attacked at Max’s house.
The reveal of everything that happened left us with a huge WTF moment. Jones is the reason Maria is in the coma and we still are not sure why he put her in one. Before he did it, he asked her about her great grandmother, so it’s clearly got something to do with that. Exactly what that is, we don’t know. This is a bad situation all around and now that he’s got his hands on the alien glass sword, all hell is about to break loose.
Other Thoughts
- Really starting to wonder if Mimi saying “The alien will hear her” was in reference to Jones and NOT Rosa.
- We always love seeing Alex.
- Malex forever.
- Where the hell is Kyle?
- “I’m not the girl I was a year ago.” – Rosa to Isobel and Liz.
- Seriously, that Malex sexual tension. We love it and we are here for it.
- “Don’t Judy Blume me.” – Rosa to Isobel.
- “Don’t Kyle and Maria deserve a few flames?” – Michael to Alex.
- We really enjoyed the conversation between Alex and Liz. Especially them having their “What Would Kyle Do” moment.
- “If you sell your soul to the devil, you will always get burned.” – Alex to Liz.
- Still trying to figure out how Sheriff Taylor knew that the charred sword belonged to Max.
- Nathan Parson’s has been doing a great job this season pulling double duty as Max and Jones.
