Every week since season three of Roswell, New Mexico began, I have struggled with just how to start my reviews. There is so much information in each episode that I often feel like Liz trying to process it all. Roswell, New Mexico episode 3×08 “Free Your Mind” was all about saving Maria and her mind hence the title “Free Your Mind.”
Let’s get into this review.
In Roswell, New Mexico 3×07 “Goodnight Elizabeth” it ended with Jones being able to fully gain control of Marias mind to transport her into March 11, 1969. Episode 3×08 “Free Your Mind” picks up with Jones informing Maria, he wants her to take him on the path her grandmother Patricia took that day at Caulfield Prison. Maria doesn’t want any part of Jones’s plan and even when he threatens to never let her wake up if she doesn’t follow his commands, she still refuses to give in.
Liz, Isobel, Rosa, Michael, and Alex are united in trying to save Maria and stop Jones. After Rosa offers to help Liz and she refuses, she goes into the mindscape with Isobel to find Maria. Liz has a very bad habit of underestimating Rosa and she’s forever trying to protect her. I don’t think she’s realized just how much stronger Rosa has gotten in the time that she’s been away in California. Liz is so consumed with thinking she has to be the smartest one in the room which she finally admits to herself, that she pushes others and their ideas aside.
Until she realizes this, she spends most of the episode on her own while Maria, Isobel, and Rosa lie in an Inception-like sleep state. Isobel has never underestimated Rosa and has always seen her for the strong person she is. It makes us so happy to see Rosa finding purpose in her life especially with her newfound gift of picking up sound frequencies. Once Rosa and Isobel reunite with Maria, they take the path Patricia did and learn a few things along the way.
Caulfield is a dark place known for doing alien experiments on people of color. As Maria steps into Patricia’s shoes, she learns that she was working with Michael’s mom Nora to bring down Dr. Lockhart. In the episode we also learn that she and Nora built the Lockhart machine together. Remember the Lockhart Machine that Alex has been learning about at Deep Sky? Yeah, Michael’s mom and Marias’s grandmother invented it.
Getting to find out that piece of information also gave us the answer we wanted as to whether the Lockhart Machine is good or bad. From what I gather it’s for good because they designed it to communicate with others like them. That brings us to Malex.
As the ladies are all working to save Maria, Michael has devised his plan to separate Jones from the sword and get the pod back. Alex refuses to allow him to go alone so he quickly tags along. Because Alex knows Michael is often ruled by his emotions, he knows he needs to be with him. You know we were all for a Malex mission because we missed these two spending time together. Michael and Alex did more than just go on a mission, they got to bond and reconnect. Alex opened up to Michael about how he injured his leg in Iraq and it was such an emotional story.
What was more emotional about that moment between them was that it gave Michael a better understanding of just how important he is to Alex. He learned that Alex would literally die without him and that just gave us the biggest amount of feels ever. We had an even bigger feels rush watching Alex grab Michael’s hand to stop him from trying to take Jones’s alien glass sword once they found him. Despite what was going on in that scene, the raw emotion of it was beyond beautiful.
One thing we can all agree on when it comes to Roswell, New Mexico is that all of the women are pretty bad ass. Maria was able to conquer the past trauma her grandmother went through, Isobel was able to stand up to Jones and take control back, Liz learned that she needed people to help her more than she thought, and Rosa was able to recognize her own worth and stop letting herself feel as if she wasn’t equal to Liz. It was nice to watch her, and Liz express their feelings once and for all. I was glad Liz apologized for not listening to Rosa earlier. Seeing them both work together to rescue Maria was a sweet sister moment.
After Maria awakens from her coma, everyone is back together again, minus Kyle who surprisingly, nobody even mentioned much this episode. I don’t know if Alex told everyone where Kyle is, but they sure didn’t seem too in a rush to find him. Things are still not completely back to normal because Jones is still out there, and he reveals to Michael and Alex that he is not in Max’s body like we originally thought. Turns out, when he switched places with Max, he actually put Max inside the stasis pod. Having this new piece of information makes us glad that Michael and Alex were able to get the pod back.
Right now, we have no clue how Liz, Isobel, Maria, and Michael, will save Max because Jones isn’t ready to give up. We see a bigger fight still yet to come.
Other Thoughts
- It’s a good thing that Alex, Liz, Michael, and Isobel got Maria transferred out of the hospital. I was starting to wonder if any of the staff would ever walk in on them doing their experiments on her.
- Michael was surprisingly calmer than I thought he would be when he found out that Alex was working for Deep Sky.
- “So, I’m Google Maps for diet Thanos.” – Maria to Isobel, and Rosa.
- I have a strong feeling Maria is going to be suffering lots of aftereffects especially since she got double dosed in the past by Dr. Lockhart.
- If Jones has been jumping into clones to stay alive, is he really immortal?
- Yes Maria, answer that phone call from Gregory Manes!!!
- That Malex kiss
- “I’m gonna do what I always do…save Max Evans.” Liz to Isobel.
