One more day, one more review! Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar” raises the level, the emotion and the bet all at the same time. This is when all the plots begin to connect with each other, to spin very fine and to make sense. And it is also when we start crying non-stop every second. Time for review! Ready?
Here we go!
Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar” begins where the previous episode ended: we just found out that this angel is the daughter of Chloe and Lucifer. Aurora… Rory, is her name. And we love it, it reminds us of “Sleeping Beauty.” Chloe’s surprise is ours… time travel, unborn daughters… it’s a lot to take in, so we need to sit down for a moment. Of course, the mother mode is activated in Chloe and she can’t help but think about everything Rory is going through now and how hard all this must be for her.
Lucifer enters the scene and we melt with those smiles and looks that are dedicated to knowing that they are going to have a daughter together. It is as if the world disappeared around them. He again makes us emotional about his growth and takes the opportunity to apologize to Rory … but he still doesn’t accept that he abandoned her, he would not, not without good reason.
Rory, well… the only thing she knows is that he did it, that he didn’t come when she needed him the most, that he was never there and she hates him for it. Except it’s not as simple. Rory’s hatred and anger mask a much deeper pain: the feeling of rejection, of loneliness, the feeling of not knowing she was loved, as if she was not enough for her father to stay by her side, as if she did not deserve his love.
Lucifer is focused on what he feels and not on what Rory feels. He is hearing her but he is not listening to her, he is focusing on him and not on her when it should be the other way around. She is suffering but Lucifer is not noticing because he is too blinded by the idea that he did not abandon her without reason. He is so sure that he concludes … that someone must have murdered him.
Of course, we also believe that there must be a very compelling reason for Lucifer to do this because he would never abandon his daughter, not knowing what it feels like and even less after seeing the joy and pride in his eyes knowing that he and Chloe created a life together … so murder may be a viable option.
This option means Azrael’s sword must disappear from the Earth… which means that Chloe will lose her strength… but she can’t bear the thought of it. She needs that pendant too much … Chloe has reached a point where she feels physically ill at the thought of separating from the powers that the pendant gives her, she simply is not able to do it … so, desperate, she convinces Lucifer to investigate his murder.
However, the investigation leads them to the same point: Azrael’s sword. Lucifer is as stubborn as Rory and in an attempt to prove the theory to her, he realizes that the sword is missing. While for Lucifer the main suspect is Rory, for us the culprit is clearly Chloe who to prevent Lucifer from raising the sword to heaven without telling her, steals it to keep it for herself.
Of course, this could not go well. Chloe is so… hooked on the power of that pendant that she lets Lucifer think the worst of her daughter and, of course, it hurts her that he thinks that about her.
He doesn’t know her and she promised herself not to expect anything from Lucifer but, even so, when Lucifer accuses her of stealing that sword, Rory realizes that she had expected something from Lucifer: love, acceptance. It is the only thing she wants, it is the only thing she ever wanted, it is the only thing she needs, just as it happened to Lucifer millennia ago… but instead she is met with suspicions, reproaches and accusations. And that is killing her, no matter how much she takes refuge in her anger. And Chloe… she witnesses all this without being able to react…
Everything has gone horribly wrong. Lucifer feels guilty for not knowing how to be a good father, after all, he didn’t have the best model and the apple does not fall far from the tree and Chloe, for her part, feels guilty for having let all this go without confessing the truth. So it is time to do it. Chloe confesses that it was her who took the sword, although her excuse is that it was protecting Lucifer. Here, she still doesn’t acknowledge the problem … but Lucifer does.
He knows that she has become addicted to this power that the pendant gives her, to the feeling of being invincible, not feeling powerless… and he hates not having realized this sooner. So much has happened that he overlooked it and he was not there for her … but that will change from now on.
Chloe, like any addict, thinks that she has everything under control and is not able to clearly glimpse the extent that she went to preserve her power, she is not able to see the damage she has just done to Rory and Lucifer but, above all everything, she is not able to see the damage she is doing to herself. Chloe is unable to see that this addition controls her in such a way that it’s beginning to destroy her life.
And she still doesn’t see it for a few more moments. She literally fights Lucifer to keep the pendant intact. He doesn’t want to hurt her, he never would, so he doesn’t attack, he just defends himself… until she reaches a point of no return. “I didn’t expect that,” neither did we, Lucifer. Chloe has the sword around his neck, about to do something crazy that would have destroyed not only her life but also her heart and soul.
Could it all end like this? But no, it’s Lucifer’s words that bring her back. It is his voice that enters a slot in that instinctive haze of Chloe and makes her see what she is about to do, what she is about to lose. This time it is Lucifer who saves her from herself, reversing the roles. She would never hurt Lucifer, never … but she was about to.
Here, Chloe recognizes for the first time that she is out of control. Time to let go of the sword and the pendant. It’s time to choose… and Chloe makes the right choice. But why does Chloe need that pendant so badly? Why does she feel that without it she can’t move on? That is the key here. You get addicted for a reason. For the impossibility of facing something, for fleeing from something, for feeling in control in the middle of the lack of control. And the answer to this question will come to us very shortly, in a beautiful conversation between Chloe and Dan.
Raise your hand if you melted with the Deckerstar hug! Lucifer hugs her to comfort her and also out of a physical need to know that she is there, safe, that she is herself again. No matter what just happened, nothing matters, the only thing that matters is that she is fine and in his arms, that’s why Lucifer sighs in relief. She is safe, she will be fine, she returned from that dark place where she was.
Mazeve is planning their wedding in Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar!” This is not a drill and they are really getting married, we love that they are in this moment and that they are going to be happy together, they deserve it. Although that happiness was almost ruined for us thanks to Rory and her joke. Of course, she learned from the best because only Maze could torture someone so quietly, stealthily and effectively … but the heart attack is real! Who will pay Linda’s bill for us? Who?
Beyond the jokes and scares, there has been a strange moment with Mazeve. Eve has casually remarked that Maze would make a good mother and her reaction… worries us. It is a look full of terror and surprise, as if that was not possible for her and she had never considered it. Eve seems so confident saying it and Maze… she seems like it’s the last thing she wants… will this cause problems between them? Again, we make an appointment with Linda and the bill increases …
In Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar” Dan visits Amenadiel again at the police station and his intentions are good, but Amenadiel needs him to stop doing it because he feels that he has to do this alone and discover everything for himself and because, well, nobody can see Dan except him so his new co-workers are going to think he’s not very sane… it hurts for Dan but Amenadiel has a point here.
On the other hand, in Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar” Ella follows her own parallel investigation and seriously believes that the world is about to end, so she decides to talk to Amenadiel about it. And we really understand Amenadiel’s reaction here because what Ella says seems like a lot of things without meaning, order or importance. It’s like a crazy conspiracy theory because seriously, what do socks have to do with all of this?
We wouldn’t have given her any credibility either after Ella blurted out her sock theory, those bastards get lost alone in the vastness of the washing machine and never come back.
Also, Amenadiel is convinced that if something really serious happened, he would have noticed it, but did he notice what happened with Rory? He didn’t and when he realizes this, he rethinks this again, despite the socks thing.
But Ella is no longer very collaborative, she is simply not in it … because she begins to suspect the truth, the one that everyone has hidden from her and if all that is true, Ella begins to see that she cannot trust them because they did not trust her and it hurts us that she thinks like that, but we also believe it is normal for her to feel like that, because it is what it seems, although there is nothing further from the truth.
The truth is that it seems very like Ella to start investigating the way only she knows how to do it, there are too many coincidences, too many strange events and it was strange that she did not begin to connect the dots. But we are divided here, we like to see her investigate but it also saddens us to miss that scene where Lucifer confesses the truth.
In a different vein, Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar” gives Dan and Chloe the opportunity to speak for the last time, to say goodbye and to help each other. Lucifer gives them that opportunity when he takes Dan over to Chloe’s house. It’s difficult because she can never see him again … but Lucifer shows his growth again by not making decisions for her, no more. It is Chloe who must decide on this and no one has the right to take that away from her. For things like this is that I love Lucifer.
They really talk about how everything is going for Trixie… and for Chloe. Because for her it was not easy, she felt guilty for everything that happened but she is also grateful that she was the one who was with him, comforting while he died, she is grateful to have been with him until the last moment. And here lies the real reason why Chloe feels dependent on that pendant: with it she feels strong and she feels that she can protect herself but, above all, those she loves.
Without that pendant she is just another human, fragile in the grand scheme of things, but with that pendant… she is really strong, not in the flimsy human way but in the heavenly way. If she had had that pendant, Dan would still be alive and Trixie wouldn’t have to grow up without her father. Without it, she feels helpless, terrified, as if death could claim one of her loved ones again, as it claimed Dan, and she could do nothing to prevent it, just stand there, watching, holding his hand until the end.
And we’ve never loved Dan as much as in this scene because he tells Chloe the truth: she doesn’t need any pendant to be strong because she already is, the strongest, bravest woman, he ever knew. Yes, she is human, but that just makes it real. Loss, pain, suffering … is part of life and is what makes happy moments worthwhile. She would die to protect the ones she loves, pendant or not, or she needs nothing to fight for them, she needs nothing to save them.
Chloe saved them all. She saved Lucifer with her love, with her understanding, she saved Dan with her forgiveness, she saved Maze with her friendship… and she always will because it is simply who she is. She will die fighting, with her boots on and her weapon in her hand, protecting those she loves, fighting to save them…without any pendant. Because that’s Chloe Decker. That’s her super power.
This was just what Chloe needed to hear, for someone to tell her this truth and for it to be someone who was not invulnerable like Lucifer but was human, who understood her, what’s more, that it was Dan, who died in her arms, it’s like an acquittal of her guilt for not being able to save him. Thus, Chloe cannot help but thank him and Dan disappears.
Chloe needed this but so did Dan and so did we. Dan never had a closure with Chloe, they moved day by day, working from scratch on a friendship for Trixie, and Dan not an impediment when he realized that Chloe’s heart was Lucifer’s but they had never had a heart to heart like this … Dan needed to close this chapter of his life.
And we needed him to close it. Dan was wonderful in every way. He was not a character that we loved from the beginning because he was the most human of all and that comes with many mistakes and bad decisions, but he won us little by little … he redeemed himself and now we could not love him more.
Near the end of Lucifer 6×05 “The Murder of Lucifer Morningstar” we see a scene between Maze and Lucifer that is one of my favorites from the whole show. It is the first time that Lucifer asks for her advice. Until that moment, Maze advised him without his asking and Lucifer ended up doing what he wanted but now, Lucifer seeks her as a friend, as a confidant, as his family.
Here, Lucifer is giving Maze the place that she rightfully earned. She is no longer a demon that protects him and is at his service, she is a friend, she is a sister, she always was. And it is moving to see how far the two of them have come and how far Lucifer has come because turning to Maze for advice also shows Lucifer’s evolution in that he knows that he is no longer alone, he is loved and can lean on the people who they love him when he needs help.
Other than this, no one better than Maze to help Lucifer with this. They were both abandoned children, they suffered the same anger, the same contempt, the same desire for revenge … and also the same feeling of loneliness and self-loathing. So Maze gives him the best advice: the important thing is Rory.
It doesn’t matter how things happened or why, it doesn’t matter Lucifer and his feelings, all that matters is her, only her, how she felt, how she feels now … and if Lucifer can do something to solve so many years of anger, hatred, of loneliness that Rory carries behind her back… Didn’t Lucifer and Maze look for the same in their parents? The understanding and love that were denied to them, for their parents to show them that they matter.
