A Discovery of Witches is back with another episode that brings Diana and Matthew closer to securing the safety of their family and friends futures. It was also an episode where Bishmont proved how strong they are as individuals, taking on parts of their mission to return sooner to each others side. And we can’t forget the other individuals on this show and their journeys! Because everyone plays a role in this story and enriches the experience of A Discovery of Witches, leaving us with an intricate web we love to break down every week.
Matthew Remembering Matters
This episode of A Discovery of Witches reaffirmed something we’ve always known about Matthew: he’s not perfect. He’s made mistakes and fucked up the lives of many. And we think, with another set of writers, producers, and actors, they wouldn’t been able to pull off everything they have with Matthew. Because, despite everything, we see a man.
A man who knows what he’s done and regrets it deeply. A man who is willing to take the steps necessary to make peace because it’s the right thing to do. And a man who admits his wrong and shows it to those around him. That’s what makes Matthew work and why we’ve always been so interested in his character and the journey that he’s been on.
Matthew remembering his past also speaks to the kind of man he’ll be for Diana and his children. Because he knows that the past has consequences that can haunt you. And he doesn’t want that for his wife or his children. No parent wants that. And this confession is a declaration that he will never do something as savage ever again.
Watching the Women Working Together
Honestly, every single woman on A Discovery of Witches is a badass. And Diana, she wouldn’t be able to do everything that she’s doing without the women at her side. Sure, she went out there and found the things she was looking for. And yes, we’ve mentioned how badass they are in previous reviews, but we can do it again.
Diana being a badass wouldn’t be possible without Phoebe’s support. Together they are doing the absolute most and they prove that two minds are better than one. And in very obvious ways, their careers have made them great partners, friends, and companions. They also prove that you can’t keep a badass woman down. She finds a way to get back up.
And then there’s the baddie known as Sarah Bishop. Now, this was a hard episode for Sarah and we’ll discuss it in the next section. But what she does to support Diana is monumental. She’s the maternal figure in Diana’s life who Diana trusts with all her heart and soul. Sarah is a guiding and calming force that makes this journey together easier.
Point being, again, we need more of these women being badasses on A Discovery of Witches.
What Sarah is Feeling is Real
The most honest part of 3×03 of A Discovery of Witches is the way that Sarah acted. She’s just lost Emily and she’s in pain. She also feels like she doesn’t fit in. Combine those together and you’ve got a combination for anxiety and wanting to get the hell out of there. That’s why we don’t think that she was acting out of character in this episode.
Sarah missing Emily with all her heart. And she loves Diana, she truly does, but we can tell that in her heart she feels like Emily would’ve done better at this. Emily would know what to say, what spells to cast, or what to do next. And without her, Sarah is just incomplete and not someone that Diana needs at this very moment.
What she doesn’t realize, until her new friends reassure her, is that she’s exactly where she needs to be. She’s with people who acknowledge her grief, need her support, and are 100% there to give her the time she needs. That’s why we’re happy that she stayed and that she decided to work through the turmoil they’re all going through together.
That’s strength. That’s Sarah Bishop.
