A Discovery of Witches 3×04 might be our favorite episode of the series to date. And honestly, it’s due to the performances by our very own Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode. Like, we knew they were good actors. But the birthing scene, and the moments that came after, made us realize how truly brilliant they are. So, without further ado, let’s dive into episode 3×04!
That Diana Birth Scene

The intimacy of Diana’s birthing scene…we almost have no words. It felt real, raw, and like the kind of thing, you’d actually experience during birth. And this is coming from someone who has never experienced a birth firsthand but who help the hand of someone who did and saw how it’s nothing like they show on TV.
Then A Discovery of Witches came around and was like, “We’ll do it.”
We’re still not over the way that Diana expressed herself, not being afraid to show pain or tell Matthew that she was hurting. He was there for her for every moment and held her hand and supported her in the way that she needed. Because Diana set the pace and he followed her lead, proving how attentive he is to his partner.
We also absolutely loved the way that Sarah and Marcus were there for Diana. Sarah was there, not as a replacement for Diana’s mother, but as someone who loved Diana and would be there from start to finish. And Marcus was there with the understanding that he would follow Diana’s lead and offer help when needed.
Altogether, it was a beautiful and supportive sequence of events that showed how much these people care for each other, how talented Palmer and Goode are, and how much A Discovery of Witches cares to tell stories with true humanity and love.
Seeing Diana and Matthew as Parents

Watching Diana and Matthew become parents in A Discovery of Witches is kind of surreal. Think of the people they were when this journey started. Diana was alone, disconnected from her witch self. Matthew was just cruising through life, solely focused on his research. Neither thought they would find each other and fall in love.
And even when Diana got pregnant, it felt unreal. Neither of them thought they could have such a thing because of their differences. But here they were creating a life together. But they persevered, they grew, and they came together in one of the most touching scenes aka them sitting together with their new little ones.
Now that they’re here and that they can hold them in their arms, the stakes have never been higher. People will come for them. And Diana and Matthew will fight. They already had something worth fighting for with each other. We also can’t forget their son Jack. Just this time, they have little ones to protect and guide.
So watch out baddies, because there’s nothing more powerful than a parent protecting what is theirs.
The Who Thing with Gallowglass

Personally, we’re still having a little bit of trouble with Gallowglass. That’s not to say that we hate his character. We don’t and there’s an interview with Steven Cree to prove it. We’re just a little confused by where this is coming from and why he thinks now is the best time to leave and abandon those he loves.
Yes, we used the word “abandon.” Because that’s exactly what he’s doing. Sure, he’s got “feelings” for Diana and it hurts to see her finally form a new family. But your doing now is abandoning your charge during the most dangerous part of her journey so far on A Discovery of Witches.
That’s not all.
Gallowglass is also abandoning his friends and those he loves. Does he think that the bad guys are going to go easy on Diana because they know she has children now? If anything, this episode proved that the bad guys don’t care how vulnerable you are. They will use you and then strike you down because it benefits them.
So, turn around Gallowglass and come back. Diana & Co. need you now more than ever.
A Discovery of Witches season 3 airs every Saturday.
As they follow the book I too wondered why GG left at this of all times…Fernando certainly didn’t help but I know Matthew understands…but us readers and viewers would need to delve into Deborah Harkness’ mind for the answer..
