It’s time to return to Raccoon City as Netflix takes on Resident Evil in a brand new series. Based on the Capcom game, this universe has had multiple genre-breaking movies. Most popular is the series starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, which ended up being an original character created for the movies and which this author personally loves because she’s a badass.
So, it’s kind of exciting to know that Netflix is jumping into this world and bringing us the zombies we deserve. In a Netflix press release, the streaming service said that Resident Evil will have the “best of the Resident Evil DNA.” That apparently includes bad-ass heroines, continuous fights for survival while solving a mystery, and a whole slew of creatures to take on thanks to the Umbrella Corporation.
Here’s Netflix’s official summary of Resident Evil, which we’re excited about:
Year 2036 – 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by the blood-thirsty infected and insane creatures. In this absolute carnage, Jade is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, by her father’s chilling connections to the Umbrella Corporation but mostly by what happened to her sister, Billie.
Premiering July 14, 2022, it will have an 8 episode run, with no confirmation on another season. Yet. Which is to be expected. It also will star Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, and Paola Nuñez. It will be is produced by Constantin Film, which produced the Resident Evil films themselves.
Netflix also shared some key art for Resident Evil. One had a shot of the series name with bubbling blood, while another had a vial of blood. But what’s most interesting is the one with a pill that says “joy.” No doubt that the Umbrella Corporation is going to stir up major trouble as a means of “safely” changing the lives of those who use their products in this world.
Resident Evil premieres July 14, 2022 on Netflix.
