After a long hiatus, we’re here again! The Rookie 4×17 “Coding” is a transition episode that showed how strong Lucy is and we love that! But, unfortunately, that’s the only thing it showed.
The Rookie 4×17 “Coding” begins with a shocking and heartbreaking scene…which isn’t a prelude to the rest of the episode. We actually have little to say about this episode beyond what was seen on our screens. It’s too noticeable that it’s a transition episode and The Rookie has a few already, although it’s clearly an improvement from the last episode.
However, what is worth commenting on The Rookie 4×17 “Coding” is Lucy. It’s easy for her to immerse herself in her day-to-day life and move on without her traumatic experience being a thing. Her work is so frenetic that it forces her not to think about it. Yet it’s always there, in the back of her mind…ready to rear its ugly head when it gets the chance.
Preparing for the trial forced Lucy to stop and relive that trauma, with her boyfriend of all people. And she tried to convince herself that she was okay, this was something she had to do, it’s just one more case… only it’s not.

Lucy felt that she had to prove to the world and herself that what happened to her didn’t destroy her, or her life. She needs to prove that she’s there, standing up, moving on, alive. But did she really survive?
Buried alive in that tank, Lucy thought it was over, she thought she was going to die there. But she survived and now she feels the duty to show that she not only got out of there alive but that she is living her life, not letting that traumatic experience define her life.
However, Lucy survived and she has nothing to prove to anyone. Lucy owes nothing to anyone but herself and by watching that video…she proved that she survived hell and was able to get over it, she was able to move on without letting that horrible experience define the rest of her life. And we’re proud of her and how strong and brave she is.

As for the case that we see in The Rookie 4×17 “Coding,” it failed to capture my attention. I watch too many medical shows and, honestly, I’ve lost count of the times someone hacked a hospital for money or to help a loved one – because, because of them, we’re capable of everything. So…this storyline bored me. Sorry, not sorry.
The kidnapping storyline was more interesting to me because it was a surprise that I didn’t expect. I thought that these parents were just fanatics of something that prevented them from taking care of their child effectively and reasonably (there are too many such beliefs) but it didn’t cross my mind that they kidnapped that child.
It hurts me a bit that The Rookie 4×17 “Coding” follows in the footsteps of the previous episodes in the sense that it’s one more transitional episode and it shows. In general, the show isn’t on a good run and although this episode is an improvement, I expect much more from this show. If the promo for next week’s episode is any indication, I think The Rookie will start giving me what I want.
