Well, well, shit has gotten way intense and also kinda sad. We’re halfway through this season and there is a lot of shit that has happened. It’s kind of funny, you can know about history, but when you see it on the screen, it just hits different. And sure, we’re aware that things are not always accurate and that we can’t go by movies, but and TV shows, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t enjoy them while they are here.
And it can make me appreciate the advancements we’ve had cause so much I couldn’t deal with from that time.
Is everything we read true? No. Is everything that we watch true. Fuck no. But the thing that we can commend Becoming Elizabeth on is that it attempts to fill holes in history with stories that aren’t so fucking far fetched that we’re like ya, no. The Tudors have always been drama to the max and some seriously fucked up family issues, but the if we start getting into supernatural and shit, I would be out.
I should make note that as I write this, I am having my first drink of alcohol in like six months, but that only does one thing, makes me have verbal vomit.
So we’ve left off with Elizabeth being sent away. She’s now at Kat Ashley’s brother-in-law’s house, Cheshunt Manor. It’s definitely a different place than she’s used to. But she’s also there when she’s having some issues – you know, like she hasn’t gotten her period and so she’s scared she’s prego.
Umm… what? Look, I know that Elizabeth is the “virgin Queen” but I also don’t think that is necessarily true. But whatever she’s done and what whatever she decides to do, that’s her choice. And quite frankly, between her and God. But if she’s supposedly slept with Thomas Seymour, we’re gonna go with that’s just gross and also that’s your stepmama’s hubby, but also you are FIFTEEN.
No wonder Kat is mad at your ass.
Elizabeth is not the only person whose life is a little chaotic. At court, shit is not going well. Thomas and Catherine are having issues, which surprises no one. Like the man can’t stay committed to anyone, even though he does love Catherine. He really just wants power and the pu**y.
And then there is Mary, who is on her way to visit Elizabeth, with Pedro by her side. Look, I am a little mad at Pedro, because he ain’t on the up and up, but I also an loving him and Mary and would not be mad if they got together. I know Mary is way way Catholic (and yes, I am aware how that sounds, but girl is DEVOTED) and I kinda wish that she would loosen up, because Pedro would be good for her.
Yet, that is neither here nor there. Yes, I can have ships, but that won’t change history, so I will just let those die inside my heart. Mary is trying to make peace with her sister and brother. She’s smart, as a house divided cannot stand.
My idea of a good time with my sister or brother isn’t a cockfight, but hey, it’s the times. And so when Mary and Edward bond, that’s what they do. Pedro finds out that the gold that’s being taken from churches is being used to fund the war against the Scottish. The thing about Pedro is that he’s finding a way to play both sides, but his allegiance is to Mary. He wants her to succeed and so he directs her that she’s the only one playing the game by the rules.
I love that Pedro is reminding her that she needs to play dirty. If everyone else is, she needs to also. He ends up showing her that he’s loyal, telling her truth, that he was sent by the Lord Protector to be a spy, but since meeting her, he’s not been able to do it. He’s been swayed by his emotions.
The Lord Protector wants power over everyone. It’s abundantly obvious.
I guess we should mention the fact that Catherine Parr dies in childbirth. Are we sad to see her go? Kinda. She may not have been perfect, but she was good entertainment. Her and Thomas really did love each other, I think. I also think that her dying sent him over the edge.
Thomas Seymour has made a lot of mistakes, but underneath it all, I truly believe that he wanted to have a family. He’s been searching for acceptance, for stability, for love. Catherine gave that to him, but he didn’t know how to appreciate what he had.
And even in her being gone, he doesn’t know how to appreciate it. When he returns to court, Elizabeth is there. She has apologized to her brother for her absence, and takes her place at his side.
Catherines body is barely cold and here comes Seymour, whispering in Elizabeth’s ear, “Marry Me.”
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Mary still terrifies me. She’s got nothing left to lose and that makes her even more dangerous.
- Elizabeth being given Chelsea Manor – it kinda feels awkward, but you know that’s because I wouldn’t want to go back to the place that basically tore my soul out.
- Robert is so protective of Elizabeth and so honest with her. I ship them, but again… history.
