It’s that time of year again! The fall movie season is here, and that means trailers for many awards contenders are starting to drop. The latest is Babylon…and it is WILD.
Babylon is written and directed by La La Land filmmaker Damien Chazelle. That film made him the youngest Best Director winner in Oscar history, and his 2018 directorial effort, First Man, was also well-received. Now, he returns to writing with Babylon.
The early days of cinema are the setting for this movie, as silent films transitioned to sound. The cast is full of stars, like Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire, and even the legendary Jean Smart. Relative newcomer Diego Calva joins them.
And the first trailer is bonkers.
Evidently, Chazelle wanted to shake off people’s general misconceptions about this era. Any film buff can tell you this time was not boring, and Chazelle seems committed to proving it in Babylon. The first shot here is Robbie’s character snorting drugs. Then, a lot of drinking, nudity, and profanity follow. Decadence is the order of the day for this story, and it looks like a crazy ride.
Why have they styled Robbie’s character in such a modern way? Also, why does she want to fight a snake?
La La Land presented Hollywood as a place where dreams come true. Though they may come at a cost, they are achievable. This film casts Tinseltown in an altogether different light. This dream factory also has a side of excess and debauchery. Babylon‘s very title suggests a fallen empire so it is very intriguing what this movie could hold.
