The Halloween franchise has gone through its ups and downs. It’s killed Laurie, had a spin-off inside the franchise that had nothing to do with Michael, and then retconned a bunch of stuff for funsies. But after the Halloween Ends trailer, I think they’ve gone a little too far.
Laurie is the final girl. She set the stage and was the inspiration for every final girl that came after her. And sure, she’s been “killed off” before. But this time around, the franchise is setting itself up as the “true timeline” for everything Halloween. And in this timeline, Laurie theorizes that she has to die to permanently destroy Michael?
We get it, Laurie lost her daughter in Halloween Kills for reasons. And after being haunted and hunted by Michael throughout her life, she’s grasping at straws. But this isn’t the way in the same way that it wasn’t the way to make Michael superpowered for reasons and killing all those folks before killing Karen.
Personally, we hope that this is just Halloween Kills stirring the pot and making us intrigued for what’s to come. But even then, it’s not landing with us. The permanent death of Laurie to stop Michael seems like a slap in the face to the tireless fighting and survival of the final girl that we’ve come to know and love.
But it’s premiering on Peacock, so maybe we’ll save ourselves a trip to the theater and watch there instead.
