When we hear 2023, the first thing that comes to our mind is that we’re closer to finally seeing the live action The Little Mermaid. It’s out most anticipated film of the year. We’re so excited to see Halle Bailey as Ariel. The teases have us shook.
She’s the Ariel that we’ve needed for so long.
Why was she cast? Well there’s been a lot of talk and really, honestly, it’s not for all of us to make assumptions about. Director Rob Marshall addressed the casting though when speaking to EW.
“We just were looking for the best actor for the role, period. The end,” he said about the casting choice, “We saw everybody and every ethnicity.”
As it should be for any role. It’s about who is best for the role. And if we’re being honest we want more of that.
We’re looking forward to seeing how Ariel is portrayed. We know that when it comes down to it, the animated and the live action versions of a character are different. There are always different things written so that the audience is always surprised.
So how will we see Ariel in the movie?
“She’s not afraid of the ‘other,’ the human world, especially in our film,” Marshall told EW. “There’s a wall, basically, built between the worlds. That’s the rule that is never broken.”
Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, and Daveed Diggs star in the movie alongside Bailey in the upcoming film.
The live action version of The Little Mermaid releases May 26, 2023.
