New week, new review! The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within” presents us with a crossover that is not one while Celina faces a lie that changes everything, Chenford is still the best, and Elijah disappears…for now. Ready?
Here we go!
Risky Lies in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within”

Celina had a very bitter pill in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within” when she discovered her mother’s lie. Although, the problem is not a lie. When you love someone the way family loves each other, you can forgive a lie. No matter how big that lie is, in the end, love wins the battle over the disappointment, anger, and even resentment. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, since forgiveness and trust recovery come with time, but it is possible.
However, in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within,” for Celina it’s more about the consequences that her mother’s lie. We are not only talking about Blanca’s disappearance — well, even if her mother had been there, we don’t know what would have happened — but also about guilt.
Guilt is a B*tch

As we saw in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within,” Celina felt guilty for years for the disappearance of her sister. Yes, being an adult she can rationalize the fact that she was a child and she couldn’t do anything. However, she grew up with that guilt, and even as an adult, she continues to imagine in her head what she could have done to have a different outcome.
Celina’s mother had the key to free her from that guilt and she didn’t do it. Now, Celina not only feels cheated and disappointed with her mother. She feels betrayed because her mother failed to protect not only Blanca but Celina as well.
Playing devil’s advocate here, we understand the position of Celina’s mother. As she said in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within,” she couldn’t have taken it for Celina to hate her. That would have meant losing her only remaining daughter so she made a selfish decision and lied. She thought that this wasn’t going to have consequences.
But the point is, it did. The investigation of Blanca’s case would have been approached from a different angle if she had told the truth. Furthermore, Celina grew up with a weight on her back that didn’t belong to her.
Is Chenford Going Too Fast in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within?”

Chenford talking about babies in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within” gives us life! It’s not just Lucy who thinks it anymore, but she mentions it lightly and Tim is happy with that idea. Even he dares to play along with Lucy and joke about it. It’s something that happens naturally between them. It’s like a fact that they both know it will happen.
But they haven’t been dating for long. So is Chenford going too fast? We think the answer is no. Yes, indeed, they haven’t been together for long but everything is natural between them. As we see in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within,” it feels as natural as breathing. And that’s because they know each other inside out.
They have been working together for years and it has gotten them to know each other on an intimate level. When they met, they both fell in love, so they have been in love for years — although neither of them wanted to accept it until now.
So it’s not two people who just met and are starting. They’re two people in love who finally dared to take the step of being a couple. Besides, when you know it, you know it, whether you’re with that person for ten years or ten days.
Other Stuff in The Rookie 5×17 “The Enemy Within”

- Chenford being married and talking about babies is all I ask of an episode of this show.
- Seriously, I can be watching 40 minutes of them.
- The way Tim gets so soft when Lucy is next to him…
- Again, Angela should be miles from Elijah’s case.
- Elijah, finally, seems he had an end. Although I’m not exactly sure…and I don’t like at all that he’s still alive and can come back.
- That lawyer doesn’t change…
- I like that my concern that The Rookie: Feds will take away Angela’s right to arrest Elijah was unfounded.
- Angela and Nyla in ultimate badass mode are my whole world!
- Wes did great too.
- Correction: Angela keep Charlie close!
- Again, this is NOT a crossover.
- ABC, sweetheart, call The CW and NBC to explain what exactly a crossover is.
The Rookie Season 5 airs Tuesdays at 8/7 on ABC.
