After a short hiatus, we’re back! The Rookie 5×15 “The Con” is not what we expected, surprising us at every turn…with mixed results. So it’s time to take a look at what works and what doesn’t in this episode. Ready?

Pleasant Surprises at The Rookie 5×15 “The Con”
We were prepared to not like The Rookie 5×15 “The Con” because was focused on Elijah. However, the episode surprised us for good because they approached this storyline from an angle that we didn’t expect. And we like it when a show surprises us. That being said, the ending blew everything the beginning of the episode gained.
We’ve been very vocal these weeks about how little we like that Elijah continues to cause trouble on the show. However, The Rookie 5×15 “The Con” was quite smart in focusing the plot. The show put a twist on everything that kept us glued to the couch throughout the episode. We were holding our breath on the edge of our couch.
But none of that was to any avail. In The Rookie 5×15 “The Con” the show missed the opportunity to eliminate Elijah for good. Again. So everything that we were loving about the episode was wiped out in the last few minutes. We ended up as usual, frustrated and wishing that Elijah wasn’t a part of the series anymore. But most of all, hoping the show would let him go once and for all.
Not So Pleasant Surprises
Even though the end of the Elijah plot spoiled its development, the biggest dissonant point of The Rookie 5×15 “The Con” is Nolan and Bailey’s storyline. I thought the series was going to treat this story differently. We thought that the show was going to focus on the emotional aspect.
That is, in what the death of his mother means to Nolan and the emotional shock that it supposes due to their complicated relationship. That would have been much more interesting. By contrast, The Rookie 5×15 “The Con” shows us a random plot without any emotional aspect or pretensions beyond filling minutes in the episode. And it cuts the pace of the episode in a way that doesn’t let you fully enjoy the action.
So yeah, this storyline disappointed me a lot.

- I liked seeing Angela in a badass mood.
- I loved the support Angela and Wes show each other.
- Lucy’s death glare at Aaron…
- Aaron, be more careful!
- This episode feels more like a crossover than a two-part crossover. I said what I said.
- I never thought the worst aspect of an Elijah-focused episode would be Nolan and Bailey. But here we are.
- I’m looking forward to Valentine’s Day at LAPD!
