In an effort to build a space for queer people like myself, every Sunday (or when I’m feeling spicy) I’ll be posting interviews, opinion pieces, listicles, reviews, and more focused on the LGBT community from a Latina perspective. Welcome to Queerly Not Straight! Enjoy and leave a comment below if you have a suggestion for what I should cover next.

Back when Shadow and Bone season 2 initially came out I talked about how Jesper and Wylan, lovingly known as Wesper, weren’t the drama. This came after complaints that they were too “instalove” or that their “book slowburn” was tossed out of the window without them having any significant problems. Basically, it was too easy, not dramatic enough, and as easy as breathing for them with a slight hiccup or two born out of miscommunicate that they easily solved with adoring looks and kisses.
Now Netflix has released a deleted scene from season 2 that reinforces the fact that Wesper isn’t the drama. They are the queer love and joy that I’ve desperately wanted. And it’s shown in a quiet scene where Jesper and Wylan cuddle in bed after returning to Ketterdam. There’s tea and open shirts involved. And not to mention the mood lighting. It’s simply perfect and something that we don’t get to see often enough and something that I greatly appreciate.
It’s also something that I’m slightly angry that Netflix kept out of the series. But maybe it’s a tease for the Six of Crows show. Which, I get. They’re trying to see if the interest is there. But they should’ve known that the interest was there based on the success of the books alone to know that people want as much of these two as possible. But *deep breath* I’m still grateful that scenes like this were written, filmed, and released by Netflix.
Watching Jesper open up his heart to Wylan and seeing that same kindness and adoration returned, is what we want to see more of. It’s queer joy that celebrates the small moments, including asking your partner to move in with you. It’s the kisses they shared. And it’s the way that in the middle of the shit show that is there lives, they still get these moments where it’s just them. Not the heists or the bombs. It’s just Wesper at the beginning of a grand adventure where they chose each other. And that matters.
