For others, the term fanfiction is used as a way to minimize something. Here at Fangirlish, we only use it as a compliment. We love fanfiction, and we have a tremendous deal of respect for the writers who work hard to give fandom content and bring us joy by providing us with more of the things we want. So, when we say that Meet Cute’s Baby Girl is basically fanfiction come to life, that’s the highest compliment we could be giving it.
Okay, except maybe this – it’s a good fanfiction come to life.
And it hits all the notes in that regard. Because good fanfiction isn’t only about romance, though it often features a great romance. Great fanfiction is about filling in the blanks, about the moments mainstream entertainment sometimes considers unimportant. It’s about the moments that are often glossed over, but that fans really enjoy. Soft moments. Moments of domesticity. Moments of happiness.
Baby Girl isn’t exactly about that domesticity, the story starts at the beginning of the journey, after all. But it is a story that remembers at every point that the quiet moments of introspection are also important for a character, and a relationship. For us to relate, we have to get to know a character, and it’s hard not to feel like we do as we listen to this story. In fact, the story is so engaging that, about two episodes in, I started thinking about Baby Girl and imagining the story actually playing out in front of me.
If that isn’t the perfect entertainment – that you can consume as you do other things – then I don’t know what is.
But, if you still need more to be convinced, here’s the synopsis for Baby Girl:
The daughter-slash-muse of a famous artist escapes her mother’s latest impossible demand by fleeing upstate to the farm where she lived as a child. There, she reconnects with her estranged father, tries to save his ailing business, gets into fights with a very handsome cowboy, and maybe even finds herself.
