Lisa Frankenstein is already redefining what it means to be in a love story in a single trailer. Starring Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse, it tells the story of a young woman who brings someone back from the dead aka her high school crush. Twisted? Yes. Weird? Yes? But a fun idea set on an 80’s backdrop that allows young women to explore the brutal, weird, and wild inside of them? Yes, yes, yes!
In the official trailer, you get to see that Newton’s character is a dreamer. She wants love, drama, and passion. And as someone who used to be a high school girl, I get it. And not making Newton’s character feel ashamed of that in this movie is refreshing. Instead, Newton’s character explores the more twisted side of herself and ends up on a “murderous journey to find love, happiness…and a few missing body parts along the way.”
There’s even a point in the official trailer where blood splatters on her face and she doesn’t look scared. She looks like she’s relishing it. The same thing goes for when she tells her new beau that they have to get rid of the body and her pose looks like she’s a romantic heroine on the cover of a romance novel. There is intentionality behind the way that Lisa Frankenstein is presented, filmed, and even how the official trailer is constructed that feels like an exploration of rage. And I can’t wait to watch.
