Until Dawn is without a doubt one of the scariest games to come out in the last decade. Debuting in 2015, it told the story of eight friends who are trapped together on a remote mountain retreat. The thing is, they aren’t alone and there is something out there hunting them. And it will tear them apart if they’re not careful. That’s where the player comes in. Because you don’t get to play just one character. You get to play as each of the eight characters and every single choice you make matters. That makes it so everyone who played the game and got a unique result at the end of it. It’s the epitome of the butterfly effect but in video game form. Now we’re getting a film adaptation.
According to Variety, David F. Sandberg is set to direct the film adaptation of this horror video game. Some in the horror genre might be familiar with him because he is known for directing Annabelle: Creation and the utterly terrifying and underappreciated Lights Out. He will be joined by Gary Dauberman, who was the screenwriter for It Chapter Two and The Nun. And it’s going to be very interesting to see what plot or character the film adaptation decides to focus on because they said it was to be a “r-rated and terrifying love letter to the horror genre.”
If that isn’t enough for you to go and check out a playthrough of Until Dawn on YouTube, there’s the cast to consider in the video game. Hayden Panettiere, known for the Scream movies and Heroes, is pivotal to the cast. And so are other familiar faces like Rami Malek, Peter Stormare, and Brett Dalton. Personally I hope that Panettiere and Malek do a guest star stint or appearance in the Until Dawn film adaptation. They deserve recognition for the hard work they did in bringing these characters to life through motion capture. And I’m personally just interested in more people entering the horror video game space as there are so many unique stories that I would love to see get film adaptations.
