We’re not in Kansas.
You definitely aren’t in Kansas, Percy. You’re in in the underworld and it’s a place that will change everything. Nothing will remain the same and it’s not just because you have to outrun the dog who has some serious anger issues. Then again, if you were trapped in darkness, wouldn’t you be upset too?
One has to wonder why Aries is such a bitch, but he is. He totally is. He’s not even in this episode, but the issues with him are.
SPOILERS BELOW – DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED EPISODE 1×07
In order to get to the Underworld, Percy has to go visit Creepy… I mean his bro Crusty. Procrustes, is the evil son of Poseidon, guardian of the Underworld. He’s got a mattress store that looks like hell itself. Hell, in this show, looks better than this store.
It’s the penultimate episode of the season and Percy, Annabeth, and Grover have to get into the Underworld and that means walking through the room of doom. But they have a plan. A good plan. One can respect that these three know that they are going to do everything in their power to make sure that this quest is finished.
Even if the Underworld smells.
What these scenes are so good at doing is showing that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are really bonded and have found a way to make sure that they complete their quest. They may not always get each other but they will be there for each other. It’s part of what makes this show move along and you become invested. It’s not the big guest stars.
It’s the way that you want to see glimpses of the books and you get just that in a cast that brings it to life in a way that no one else would be able to. Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri are phenomenal. They continue to prove that each moment in this show.
And it’s beautiful. You want to call your friends and tell them to take notes. If you aren’t willing to go to the Underworld with me – step back.
What I am trying to understand in the mix of all of this what the flashbacks are for. Besties, what are we missing? Well, that will have to take a back seat, because well, we’re focused. We’re moving forward. We’re embracing everything that we need to.
Because the crew is in the Underworld and TBH, it’s so f*cking dark down there, I am squinting to try and figure out WTF is happening down there. Doesn’t anyone have a light? Where are the fires of hell lighting? I couldn’t see half of what was happening.
But the thing is, I felt. I felt like I was running from that two headed dog. Fido can go to hell (oh wait he’s there). I felt like I was walking through hell with them. I felt like all of my regrets were coming full circle and I would be trapped there. I became angry when they were almost sucked down to wherever and then find out that they had the bolt.
Now, lets be real – we all know that they didn’t steal the bolt. The bag is the one Aries gave them and this meant that there were close Cronos who was like Grandson, give me the bolt. Only Percy is able to make sure that he doesn’t get pulled down to Tartarus and saves him and Grover.
The two find Hades lair and TBH, he’s not that scary. He’s a pain in the ass, but not that scary. That is until he thinks that his Daddy is gonna make his way out and come for him. He then wants the bolt, but Percy is like nah bro. Not happening. I’m gonna go get your whatever, and you’re gonna give me my Mom.
Thank God, well Poseidon, that Percy has those pearls to get him and Grover out. It takes so much courage to leave his Mom there and know he can’t protect her. Percy’s Mom is his life and he understands her more than he ever has.
Hades may not like that Percy and Grover are going to leave and not give him the bolt. Percy has shown strength that one shouldn’t have to show at his age, but that’s okay, because he’s not like anyone else his age.
We finally get what the flashbacks have been there for. Percy was supposed to go to this school that he didn’t want to go to. His Mom is trying to figure out where to send him and what to do. So she calls for his Daddy to show up and he does.
Now, I am not gonna deny we were dangerously navigating into DILF territory when Poseidon steps into the room. I feel like he can have a little bit of grace, because he shows up. I do want to know that Poseidon has been there for him. I want to root for him.
As Percy’s Mama contemplates taking him to Camp Half Blood, the two talk and she admits she doesn’t want to.
She says, “I want him to know who he is before your family tells them who they want him to be. He is better than that.”
Yes he is Mama. Yes he is.
Poseidon doesn’t want to talk to Percy, but he’ll be there for him when he truly needs it. Sounds ominous, but it’s gotta get good. Because one more episode left and the crew wakes up on a beach.
Lets see what happens next. Percy needs to meet his father. There are confrontations left to be had and we still need to know…
Who is the lightening thief?
