I am going to admit that I have a complex relationship with Palm Royale. There are moments when I love it, moments when I hate it, and moments when I am like what the actual *@!% (you can decide the curse word to put there). This weeks episode though, it made me think about a lot of things and honestly, I am not sure that I liked it.
And then again, I am not sure I didn’t.
Palm Royale has something going for it – this amazing cast and beautiful setting and costumes. That being said though, the writing is sometimes all over the place. I do think though that part of that is the writer leaving clues to the next thing. It’s just sometimes, having to drag this out makes me want to bang my head into a wall.
Douglas Delacortte is absolutely one of the worst characters in this show. Yes, everyone has their secrets in Palm Beach but honestly, his secrets aren’t the worst thing aobut him. The worst thing about him is that he’s just stupid. And like I am not even one that likes to say that, but he just has these delusions of actually being a good businessman and that is the last thing that he is.
Maxine wants to turn over a new leaf and not pull off the beach ball the same way that Norma had. She knows that it was all blackmail and she doesn’t want to be that way. It’s a nice thought, but if we’re all being honest, that’s not the way that the world works. Not just in television shows. Life is all about knowledge – regardless if we all try and deny that.
The thing is I do get why it is that Maxine wants to turn a different road, but it’s also something that she’s naive about. It’s a lesson that she’s going to learn really quick.
Douglas basically has her draining back accounts to pay for this building that him and Perry want to build. He’s super excited about it and Maxine isn’t going to fight him on it, but she should. She should because he has no regard for the people around him or what taking that much money from his aunt can do.
Maxine, she wants to fit in. She wants to be this person that has a great reputation and it’s because she came from nothing. She was abandoned and found in a sink. She took on the name of the women in the shiny sheet in order to win pageants. She has no idea who she is, but does know who she wants t be. And that person would be one of the elite.
The elite are the women that she sees in front of her. The elite are the women of the Palm Royale.
It takes Perry being outted for the Miami condo collapse in the paper for Douglas to realize that he’s done something bad. I wonder though, even with that knowledge, if he’s going to come to terms with it. I think that he’s going to just do as he always done – run from his responsibilities. He doesn’t genuinely care about anyone. He cares about the money that he will make and that is it.
It’s nice seeing Douglas sober up and realize that he’s made a big mistake. A huge one. It’ll be interesting to see how he recovers.
But, when it does coming to people recovering – Maxine is going to recover in a different way. The person that is helping her? Well thats Robert. I am shocked too. But I think that Robert has realized that Maxine doesn’t have it easy and they two of them are more alike than he thinks.
He also sees that she wants to do right by Norma. It’s no surprise that he wants to also. But he also wants to take down the women of the club and i do believe that even though I didn’t necessarily trust Robert, I appreciate him right now.
He gives Maxine the invitations and tells her that the blackmail is in there. All she has to do to save the Dellacortes is throw the Beach Ball. Let people know that she’s still go the dirt and they will come. They will donate. They will keep the money coming.
Hey, sacrifices must be made and sometimes Maxine, you gotta go against what you think you want to do and do what is necessary.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Linda’s Dad passing, I feel for her. That’s gotta be hard. Seeing the way she broke. I have no idea how Laura Dern handled that being as it was her real life Dad playing her Dad. I woulda lost it.
- Evelyn is just evil. She cares more about her status than anything else and even holding blackmail over her daughter in order to keep her place in society. She’s gross.
- Diana – her husband knows about her affair and he’s good with it, so he can have his own? That’s just gross. All these people need to learn how to be faithful.
- Norma walking to the revolver. WTF. Did Maxine get rid of the wrong gun?
- The Prince and Robert? Wait, I don’t think the Prince is really the Prince. And if he is, well… I will eat my words. BUT, I think that the Prince is scamming Robert too
