Jennifer Lopez stars as Atlas in the upcoming Netflix film and honestly, it kind of looks lame. In the movie, JLo plays Atlas Shepherd, a “brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence.” That AI just so happens to have a physical form played by Shang-Chi‘s Simu Liu who just so happens to be called Harlan Shepherd.. His character wants to eradicate the human race and replace it with something better. Them. When JLo joins a mission to capture this renegade robot, she ends up crashing on a remote planet in a mech suit run by AI with threats left and right.
While the official trailer tries to deliver on sci-fi realness with a side of “the growing threat of AI,” what we end up getting is something that looks like a continuation of JLo’s highly ridiculed visual album This is Me…Now. Considering that she’s a producer on this film, it fits. At any moment we expect her to break out into dance while singing about a lost love. There’s also no heart in this. Sure, JLo was able to sell herself as an action star back in her Anaconda days. But not a single line she delivers feels compelling or like I want to get to know her or this basic AI. Hence, the lame verdict.
